Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

I picked the murderer very early on but still really enjoyed the book. Well written and read. Good character development. Love a flawed copper.

When a body is found stuffed into a barrel at a garbage dump, covered in long red lacerations, Detective Jenna Alton and her new deputy, David Kane, rush to the scene. Nothing ever happens in the small American town of Black Rock Falls, so Jenna believes the victim must be one of two recent missing persons, and she fears for the life of the other. Both were strangers to the town, but there's nothing else to link them. Jenna knows someone must have seen something, but no one's talking.

This book involves two highly trained military/police types who have been relocated to the back of beyond because dangerous people want to kill them. So far so good.

Locals start going missing etc.

The female of the two is the local sheriff and the male her new deputy. She appears not to be able to defend herself from various attacks while getting angry with him for saving her. (Spoiler alert) at the end she drives to the home of the psychopaths not telling anyone where she was going and drinks drugged coffee. What an idiot! I’m not reading any more of this series.

Over the years, former military bodyguard Ryan Lock has made more than his fair share of enemies. It was only a matter of time before one of them came looking for payback. A serial rapist brutally murdered inside California's highest-security prison for women. A frantic gun battle in the middle of downtown Los Angeles. A beautiful, young defense attorney violently abducted from her office. A series of apparently random events that are anything but. Someone is hell bent on revenge, and their target's name is Ryan Lock.

Usually it annoys me when characters in books go around blaming themselves for various deaths of other characters In this book the opposite is true. Innocent people are killed every chapter and it never occurs to the ‘hero’ to stop his quest.

I listened the whole way through but I didn’t enjoy it.

Glad I did! It's a really well told tale, weaving new snippets in throughout. Great book. I will get more of this author.
