Extraordinary things happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart. Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, living with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor.

This book was very easy to understand while being rather "deep". I loved the way that the author began by telling about his youth and about how he was seeking something in the magic shop but found something/someone much greater! It's exciting to find a book written by a scientist which delves into the way that the heart and brain work together!!!

Wow! What a story! Not only did I learn so much about the kingdom of elephants, while enjoying a well told story; I also feel that I understand the "Other Side" a bit better! Thanks to Ms. Picoult for writing this novel and to Audio Books for recording it!👍👏

I love that the characters are so well defined; while staying true to their beliefs, they are also changing as are their circumstances! Excited to begin the next book!

Now, in this heartwarming memoir, Ira paints a vivid portrait of Amish life - from his childhood days on the family farm, his Rumspringa rite of passage at age 16, to his ultimate decision to leave the Amish Church for good at age 26.
