When Earth is attacked by the hung hounds, ravenous trans-dimensional mutts with huge penises, it’s left to coolheaded Humphrey (who has no idea what’s going on), the super-sexy and feisty Dawn (who does), a retired porno actor, and a monkey in a wedding dress to save the planet.

Truly one of the sadder parts of recorded history. Socrates is persecuted for thinking differently than most, and helping others to do the same. If you are history buff or just someone who enjoys short listens, this is a good pick.

There really isn't any other way to describe him. Garren is an a$$hole! But so are so many of my favorite characters. A young genius surrounded by dunces trying to get by in life while keeping himself amused at the same time. The author does a fantastic job of building out a world that is at the same time reminiscent of the past and a view of a grim future. The only negative I could give this book belongs with the narration. While the main story is narrated just fine, his mastery of voices leaves a bit to be desired. They are mostly high pitched and somewhat drawn out. Not so bad as to ruin the whole experience for me, and I am sure with a bit more practice under his belt he could get much better.

I don't like to read giant reviews, so I keep mine short as well! I liked this book enough that I will be buying the rest of the series. I need to see what kind of crap Garren gets into next!

The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pulitzer Prize-winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter". His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures.

When I read the paperback of this novel many years ago it easily became one of the greatest stories I had ever read! Somehow, Toole managed to create a character that was both antagonist and protagonist at the same time! Ignacious Riley is a true genius that like many I have known, has absolutely no idea how to interact with the rest of the world. His poor mother, who is also the legitimate cause of many of the problems, is as deeply developed a character as Riley.
I have probably listened to this audiobook over a dozen times. This is not only due to the great story, but the amazing narrator. His ability to capture the accents and nuances of each character is second to none. Narrators are as important to me as the story could ever be, and Barrett Whitener deserves the highest of praise in this respect.
I tend to keep my reviews short and to the point so I will end on this note. If you have never read this book, or heard of this author, your life is incomplete. Please take the time for this one and recommend it to your friends and family. This is an amazing piece of fiction that belongs in everyone's library.

The author was able to pack a whole lifetime of love and loss in a 45 minute story. That is, in my opinion, a masterful skill. Watching the short journey across the country with the woman who raised him, and watching as her mind breaks down stirred up a lot of emotion in me. I don't want to give anything away, but the story takes an unexpected turn and ends on a high note! I would definitely say this is worth 45 mins of your day!
