Black Against Empire audiobook cover art

good book, but distractingly non linear

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

good Book, and I'm sure highly researched, but the author does a horrible job of keeping things linear... he'll talk about one person or another doing this or that at a point where the story still has them in jail or already dead -- and when you're trying to get the context of something you never knew anything about it makes it very difficult.

the opening few hours are riveting and very well told and then it gets dry and as I said nonlinear

some good insights on how it was and how it is for black folks, but the book is mostly about the protagonists relationships with the people he's having sex with.

books like this are the reason I don't hand out 5 star reviews to every book I like. so I still have something left for the 1 in 10 or 20 that I absolutely love.

Do not miss this book.

imagine River from TV's Firefly wants to tell you an 8 hour story...its about a steampunk circus and 4 hours in there is no plot, not so much as an emotional attachment to any character.

I'm more than halfway through this book its discombobulated garbage, the narrator keeps jumping times, without so much as a paragraph break.

On the surface this looks to be a funny little "waste time" kind of book.
Into the middle of the book Jim starts making some fine points about relationships and how to deal with and or find the woman in your life.
Realize he makes the point by comedically pushing it to comical extremes, but the underlying thought processes are actually pretty good.

The book starts exceptionally slow, dwindles around without much real literary effect, a lot of so and so went to visit so and so and said this.

That being said, once the book picks up, it's great, and is very interesting.
