Paris, 1893. Twenty-five-year-old Marie Sklodowska is studying science at the Sorbonne - one of the only universities in the world that has begun to admit women. A thousand miles from her native Poland, with no money and the odds stacked against any woman daring to pursue a career in such a rigorous field, Marie throws herself into her studies. She's certain that to succeed in a man's world, she will have to go it alone. Her meticulous plans get thrown slightly off-course when Marie attracts the attention of an accomplished young physicist, himself on the precipice of greatness.

No, it’s not a biography, but this short story lays out the potential thoughts of Madame Curie as a pioneer woman of science in the late 1800s. It’s a story of empowerment - not letting anything, or anyone, create obstacles while following her passion for science. The narrator does a good job with Polish accents.

Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

It’s a murder mystery, WWII story, love stories, human interest storyline all wrapped up in one book. I’m not usually a fan of war stories, but this one had me hooked. Michael Beck did a good job of performing about 12 different voices - though I did have to increase speed a little because he’s a deliberate narrator.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms.

Listening to her book, for me, was kind of like when I went to see Bohemian Rhapsody, the movie about Queen. I was only a mainstream Queen fan until the movie. It was learning their backstory that made me really appreciate them. Same for the Obamas. I didn’t know a lot about the Obamas, and certainly not much about Michelle, but listening to her life story, her beliefs, how they met, her life as FLOTUS, brought a new perspective for me. I thought it was light enough to stay interesting, but deep enough to understand how she built her beliefs. It was pretty long though ... she’s traveled from DFW-SJC twice with me, cleaned house, and worked out on the elliptical for 2 weeks. 😉

Superstar comedian and Hollywood box-office star Kevin Hart turns his immense talent to the written word by writing some words. Some of those words include: the, a, for, above, and even even. Put them together and you have the funniest, most heartfelt, and most inspirational memoir on survival, success, and the importance of believing in yourself since Old Yeller.

Very entertaining, as expected, but such a great story of his 16-year “overnight success” journey. A true story of persistence, drive, humility, self-actualization, love, pain and heart. He has some poster-worthy quotes around Chapter 67. It’s long, but lots of laugh out loud moment (apologies to the person sitting beside me on the flight) that stays engaging even in the serious moments.

Being an NC native, I️ always love Nicholas Sparks books. Ari’s read probably kept me more interested than the story itself in some sections, as his read sounded like he was telling you HIS story, not just narrating a book. Storyline-wise, it got really slow in the middle and probably could have used a little more drama, but overall it had strong characters and is ultimately a positive story on the benefits of actions taken because of true love.

I️ almost didn’t listen to this book because the narrator’s voice in the first chapter totally turned me off. But I️ trudged through because the book sounded interesting... and it was! The narrator used different voices for the characters which helped keep the story straight and he also sounded like he was enjoying the read more as well. Lots of plot twists that kept me coming back to listen to more at every chance I️ could. Good mix of characters to love and hate; characters were fully developed. Really great storyline - I’d already recommended it to 3 other people before even finishing the book!

This story of a baby stolen from her crib has many twists and turns to keep you guessing who took and why. The narrator defined the voices of the 7 main characters well enough to easily determine who was who without the over barrage of "said Tom" kind of lingo.
