Hailed as Charlotte Brontë’s “finest novel” by Virginia Woolf, Villette is the timeless semi-autobiographical tale of Lucy Snowe. Left with no family and no money, Lucy goes against her own timid nature and travels to the small city of Villette, France, where she becomes a school teacher in Madame Beck’s school for girls. During her stay, she falls in love—twice—and discovers an independent, inner strength rarely seen in women of her time.

A bit grim. I was a little resentful of a self-disparaging way Lucy refers to herself, describes herself. It’s a bit too far, despite the time and place, the class hierarchy. But overall an excellent story, masterfully narrated by the magnificent Davina Porter.

Tiffany Aching has spent years studying with senior witches, and now she is on her own. As the witch of the Chalk, she performs the bits of witchcraft that aren't sparkly, aren't fun, don't involve any kind of wand, and that people seldom ever hear about: She does the unglamorous work of caring for the needy. But someone - or something - is igniting fear, inculcating dark thoughts and angry murmurs against witches.

Terry’s use of language to express some incredibly complex and interesting concepts is simply amazing! A witch, in his stories is simply the heart of a community, its protector, its observer, its consciousness. What a wonderful spin on a “witch”! We are reading all the books about Tiffany Aching with my 10 year old daughter, who is learning kindness, community, how to pay attention and notice, how to think for yourself, and most importantly take care of those that need help.

A must read for every young mind. We tried to prepare our daughter for the difficult part, tried to focus on the love and the beautiful relationship between the boy and his dogs, and the sadness, in fact, is a part of life. Beautiful story, incredible family, very well narrated.

This book was recommended by producers after OUTLANDER. It was terrible to have this sad romance follow the rich story and vocabulary of Outlander. Lame storyline, no character development, pathetic female character who only wants to please her “master” husband. I feel like the whole story recycled the same 100 words. “She looked at him, her heart melted, but he didn’t give her permission to speak...” There are far more interesting stories out there, skip this one!

Tiffany Aching, the boldest heroine ever to swing a frying pan against the forces of evil, is beginning her apprenticeship in magic. She expects to work hard, learn spells, and become a witch. She doesn't expect to find herself doing chores, caring for the careless, and trying to outthink an ill-tempered nanny goat. There must be more to witchcraft than this!

This book is very well written and portrays the ugliness of child neglect. Those raised by loving parents in safety, secure in family love have no idea the perils neglected kids live through. And the backdrop is the broken child welfare system, the machine that churns out even more broken young adults. Very moving, but graphic and at times difficult to listen to.
