Struggling with working-mother guilt, Marlene Greene hopes a camping trip in the forest will provide quality time with her three young children - until they see fires in the distance, columns of smoke distorting the sweeping view. Overnight, all communication with the outside world is lost. Knowing something terrible has happened, Marlene suspects that the isolation of the remote campsite is all that's protecting her family. But the arrival of a lost boy reveals they are not alone in the woods, and as the unfolding disaster ravages the land, more youngsters seek refuge under her wing.

The main character angers me but I am still fascinated by her! Her choices bother me to no end as it could have been better! However in panic mode as she is I have to forgive her as she isn’t thinking clearly. I keep searching for the happy endings to her choices. This book is not predictable by any means. Give it a shot and see for yourself!

In the beginning it was hard to connect to the book. During the characters rendezvous it was an attention grabber. The end of the book was all over the place and lost my attention as a reader. The ending felt more like a confusion of multiple books with a lack of character development and a lack of connection to the main story.

Lyra's story begins in the Haven Institute, a building tucked away on a private island off the coast of Florida that from a distance looks serene and even beautiful. But up close, the locked doors, military guards, and biohazard suits tell a different story. In truth Haven is a clandestine research facility where thousands of replicas, or human models, are born, raised, and observed. When a surprise attack is launched on Haven, two of its young experimental subjects - Lyra, or 24, and the boy known only as 72 - manage to escape.

Totally loved the two perspectives! The story was brilliantly built! The nicknames for everyone and everything amuses me. However the story still feels like something is missing. Like explanations and back story. I am hopeful another book will follow! Maybe the different perspectives of the doctors? What happens next? What led them to the point they were at? Brilliant book and I hope to find more like this!

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

This book will move you on multiple levels! You can relate to the situations of the various characters. This emotional adventure is one that you will not regret! This book leaves you wanting more but in a good way! I wish this story never had an end. But as with all good things it must end. I fell in love with each and every character and love how so many various types of people can accept each other as is! That is something many people don't understand. This was the book that finally took first place in my life! I am 36, nothing has topped my 1st place book since I was 16! Bravo! Bravo! Can't wait to reread this one multiple times!!!! Thank you for your gift to the readers Fredrik Backman!

I struggled to finish this one after multiple attempts. I don't know how to explain it but the best I can say is wordy and over explained. I love the Apprentice series but this one felt like listening to a dictionaries of people and their agendas and the story felt all over the place. It may be me and I will attempt to listen again but for some reason I couldn't get hooked. By the end of the book I still feel as if I only know a fraction of the story line with holes and blanks that didn't sink in. Like reading a boring text book for a research paper. You can read the same paragraph multiple times and still be clueless as to what was truly said. Has sections that are awesome and captivating but lags in between losing my attention. I prefer the previous reader as well. I got lost listening to multiple new voices after being so use to my usual reader from the Apprentice series. I could no longer identify the characters by voice which felt strange to me. I felt a personal connection to my characters voices. I lost that connection through new voices in this book.
