Long before historians added "the Great" to his name, Alexander stated, "I would rather live a short life of glory than a long one of obscurity." He certainly lived up to this ambition, conquering most of the known world in just 13 years before his death at age 33. Though undefeated in his lifetime, Alexander died unsatisfied - he always wanted more. His ambitious personality comes as no surprise considering his upbringing: born to powerful parents, he studied under Aristotle and grew up believing himself a descendant of the Greek heroes Achilles and Heracles.

…. of Alexander the Great This is an informative, bare-bones look at the high and low points of Alexander the Great. I found the substance of the book captivating and the one hour (plus) flew by. Larry G Jones' performance kept my attention and his soothing yet dynamic voice made the subject matter even more interesting. Scott Wright has just come in 2nd at the annual golf tournament to Brock Weiner, again. Will he ever be able to beat Weiner or will the win continue to elude him? He has 364 days with his buddies to practice, hang out s and try to figure it out. Oh, and did I mention yoga? Lots of quips and razzing between Wright and his golf friends make this a fun book for golfers and nongolfers alike, in my opinion. Kevin Michael has captured the fraternity/brotherhood of these men who love golf. Stewart Gauffi is a talented voice actor. As per most of my audiobook listens, I enjoyed listening at a faster speed. … Is like reconnecting with a long, lost family member– Which is interesting because that is the premise for THE CHAMBER. A promising young law associate is well on his way to climbing the grueling ladder to partner when he drops everything to pursue the defense of a death row inmate, his estranged grandfather. A grandfather who was part of the Klan in his youth and responsible for the deaths of 2 Jewish boys, devastating the whole family.

Michael Beck masterfully tells the story. I could feel the anger, sadness, the devastation & the few glimpses of lightheartedness.

If you could sum up The First Hostage in three words, what would they be?

Frightening, action and adventure

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely! Terrorists have taken the president hostage and somehow JB Collins, journalist, is right in the thick of things. An unlikely hero, Collins somehow seems to know everything about military maneuvers, handling any sort of weapon, etc.

Which scene was your favorite?

I cannot reveal that without giving away the ending. I will save the worst scene is what JB finds in caves and cages near the end of the story.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

USA President Taken Hostage - Time Is Running Out

Any additional comments?

There are some pretty gruesome scenes and descriptions. A lot of violence, as well.

Fynn: I caught the silhouette of a woman out of the corner of my eye when I was carrying out an execution. She could have been a spy, so I had no choice but to follow her. When I cornered her in an abandoned house, I knew I had to have her. Anya: I'm just trying to survive this bloody war. When I heard men's voices on the other side of the fence, I couldn't help but be curious. The sound of gunshots sent me scurrying back to my camp. I never expected to be followed.

In some undisclosed country, this is a modern day (I think) war romance. Anya is on the rebel side, starving but beautiful. Fynn is a prince in the conquering army. He doesn't care who Anya is or where she is from, he only knows that he needs her.

The last hour of the program is (not a spoiler if you have read the publisher summary) continuous sex – FYI

The story is fairly good – I have a hit or miss record with Skye Corgan. I will give the story 3.75 strong stars

The narration by Kira Omans is okay. Her performance of Anya is good but Fynn is a bit slow. However, if I turned the speed up (which usually helps) the cadence was off. This performance receives 3 stars.

Overall I am rating this book at 3.75 solid stars. The story was good and the steaminess was there, as well. I am a bit disappointed with the performance.

Would you listen to Book Hits: Gripping Short Thrillers Collection again? Why?

Possibly. I have a lot of books in my TBR (to be read) pile. However, these would be perfect to listen to again while waiting for an appointment, picking up kids from school activities or a short road trip.

Which scene was your favorite?

The most memorable scene is the last in TAKEN. I don't think it was my favorite, but it is the one that will stick with me the longest.

Any additional comments?

This series which runs at just under 4 hours for 4 books, takes the listener all over the country and introduces 4 very different circumstances. When I * agreed to listen in exchange for my unbiased review, I was hesitant. However, once I began listening, I HAD to finish it in one sitting.

Jay Prichard Performs all of the characters seamlessly. His narration, along with the content, had me from "page 1". Prichard never disappoints.

I would recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of mystery, thrillers and detective style books. Surprisingly, there is no strong language and very little descriptions of violence. It is perfect for all audiences, in my opinion.

"All states, all powers, that have held and hold rule over men have been and are either republics or principalities. Principalities are either hereditary, in which the family has been long established; or they are new. The new are either entirely new, as was Milan to Francesco Sforza, or they are, as it were, members annexed to the hereditary state of the prince who has acquired them, as was the kingdom of Naples to that of the King of Spain."

The Prince: A Political Strategy of Niccolò Machiavelli

The Prince explores different styles of principalities, individuals who have been blessed/cursed with the title and the successfulness by which their reign is judged.

This felt like a college lecture. I could easily see it fitting into a world history course. It is very detailed but not overwhelming.

The narration of Carson Beck was spot on. He is engaging, keeping the listener listen without going over the top. 4.5 stars

One of the genre's favorite pairs returns in a classic fantasy short for both Riyria veterans and first-time readers. Several years have passed since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start their thieves-for-hire organization better known as Riyria. Things have gone well enough for the team as they do "jobs" for various nobles throughout Elan. Usually that means stealing something, but when a young heiress asks them to steal her…well, that's a first for the pair.
