Ashok Vadal was once a member of the highest caste in all of Lok. As a Protector, he devoted his life to upholding the Law, rooting out those who still practiced the old ways and delivering justice with his ancestor blade Angruvadal. None was more merciless than he in stamping out the lingering belief in gods and demons among the casteless. His brutality was legendary and celebrated. But soon Ashok learned that his life to that point had been a lie. He himself, senior member of the Protector Order, was casteless. He had been nothing more than an unwitting pawn in a political game.

to me, this story is missing something without the super powerful sword in the hands of Ashok. there was an almost "deus ex machina" type moment at the end which was narrowly avoided by some clever dialogue. it still almost felt like cheating though.

I find the backstory and the overarching goal more interesting than the actual story "on screen" but it's still a good book.

Whether they are rescuing citizens injured and freezing in the Alaskan wilderness or saving wounded Rangers and SEALs in blazing firefights at war, the PJs are the least known and most highly trained of America's warriors. Never Quit is the true story of how Jimmy Settle, an Alaskan shoe-store clerk, became a Special Forces Operator and war hero.

He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming.... This monster, though, is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

this book wasn't exactly my normal read. it was mostly about emotional conflict and dealing with normal life. my fantasy reads tend to be more fantastic than this one.

it was good though. it felt very real, very accurate.

the monster plays a central time in the story, but at the same time isn't very important in the grand scheme of things.

I don't cry during books or movies and I didn't cry during this one, but it was close. for those of you susceptible to waterworks this might be a #tearjerker
