Kate Blackwell is the symbol of success, the beautiful woman who parlayed her inheritance into an international conglomerate. Winner of a unique position among the wealthy and world-renowned, she is also a survivor as indomitable as her father, who returned from the edge of death to wrench a fortune in diamonds from the hard South African soil. Kate surveys the family she has manipulated, dominated and loved; the fair and the grotesque, the mad and the mild, the good and the evil - her winnings in life.

Read the physical book, saw the TV mini-series and loved them both.

The narration of the audiobook, however, well, where do i start...? Too many pauses where there shouldn't be pauses. Run-on sentences when there are breaks in chapters, titles, etc.

When reading a physical book, you hear the voices in your head and they are monotone, to be expected. But the narrator in this case had a blend of accents for the same person. This, mixed with the run-on sentences made it very difficult to follow.

I stuck it through because i knew the story and wanted to listen to it, but it was painful.

Another great story by Shalini Boland and narration by Katie Villa.

This is my third Boland novel and not my last.

Suspense is alive and well in this story. It proves yet again that you can't always trust the ones you do.

Some readers/listeners will say predictable, maybe, but just when you get to the 'predictable' part, a total spin, not what you think.

The ending was a total surprise, the last 5 minutes were not expected at all.

Overall, I highly recommend it. This is my second Shalini Boland novel and am planning on reading the rest...next...The Secret Mother.

When Betty MacDonald married a marine and moved to a small chicken farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, she was largely unprepared for the rigors of life in the wild. With no running water, no electricity, a house in need of constant repair, and days that ran from four in the morning to nine at night, the MacDonalds had barely a moment to put their feet up and relax. And then came the children. Yet through every trial and pitfall - through chaos and catastrophe - this indomitable family somehow, mercifully, never lost its sense of humor.

Wonderful story. Great storytelling. Buying The Plague and I next. Surprised to discover this is where Ma and Pa Kettle came from.
