In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about 60 years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all. On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds....

Hands down, this is the funniest book I have ever had the pleasure to read or listen to.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre. Not only did I enjoy it, this is the only book to my memory which made me actually laugh. And when I say laugh, I don't just mean a dry chuckle or smirk - I am referring to a big full belly laugh.

With this book Mr Croshaw has made myself a fan of his work.

Not worth the money or token. It feels like 25% of the book is devoted to explaining what happened in the last four books.

Yes, the story is interesting, but it is so obviously diluted with repetitive descriptions that I couldn't enjoy it at all.

I'm sorry I bought the book, even though I got it as part of a 2 books for 1 credit.

Deep within Syndicate Worlds' space, the Alliance fleet continues its dangerous journey home under the command of Captain John "Black Jack" Geary, who was revived after a century spent in suspended animation. Geary's victories over the enemy have earned him both the respect and the envy of his fellow officers.

The story is killed by a ridiculous amount of repetitive crap. Over and over we're given full descriptions of characters, relationships, and realities of the universe that were explained in book one.

I only listened to the book because I hoped in vain that some of the details would be skipped in this, the fourth book, and it would get on with the story.

By this point in the series, we understand the relationships between characters. We understand how the universe works. However, we are slowly dragged through in depth descriptions of both. Again.

You will be begging the narrator to skip ahead and get to some actual story and not read the parts copied and pasted from book 1.

The first book in this series is by far the best. The details described in the first book that give it uniqueness and help develop the characters is excellent - however these details are described again in full detail in this book.

It makes the book fall short, in my opinion, as it spends so much time re-explaining both major and minor details instead of further developing the story.

Captain John "Black Jack" Geary's legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic "last stand" in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance's one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic "Black Jack" legend.

The first book in this series is by far the best. Unfortunately it falls off fairly fast. The details described in the first book that give it uniqueness and help develop the characters is excellent - however it will be repeated in full detail in every remaining book of the series.

I did enjoy the book quite a bit, but I feel that I can't recommend it to other people because of the annoyance I had trying to get through the rest of the series.
