This book provided a fresh look at a common subject. The characters were well developed. The plot went through a number of twists and turns. I was rather surprised at the ending.

I would recommend this book to most readers who enjoy listening to a to a good mystery.

Marianne has a life others dream of. A beautiful townhouse on the best street in the neighbourhood. Three bright children who are her pride and joy. Sometimes her past still hurts: losing her mother early, growing up in foster care. But her husband, Simon, is always there. A successful surgeon, he’s the envy of every woman they’ve ever met. Flowers, gifts, trips to France: nothing is too good for his family. Then Simon says another woman’s name. The way he lingers on it, Caroline, gives Marianne a shudder of suspicion, but she knows it’s nothing - she can’t entertain this flash of paranoia.

Suburbia. Shady, tree-lined streets; well-tended lawns; and cozy homes. A nice, quiet place to grow up. Unless you are teenage Meg or her crippled sister, Susan. On a dead-end street, in the dark, damp basement of the Chandler house, Meg and Susan are left captive to the savage whims and rages of a distant aunt who is rapidly descending into madness. It is a madness that infects all three of her sons and finally the entire neighborhood. Only one troubled boy stands hesitantly between Meg and Susan and their cruel, torturous deaths.

This book requires a very strong stomach to finish reading. The torture scenes are believable, which makes them all the more frightening. The book condemns those who stand by and do nothing to help. The lack of humanity that enables people to be silent is truly shocking.

This relatively fast paced novel kept my attention to the end. I definitely have mixed feelings. The main characters were incredibly twisted. This is the stuff that makes up nightmares.

The different subplots alternated chapter by chapter. It was confusing at first, then fell into place. The book was filled with gratuitous violence and gory details. While I did like the plot, the book could have been shortened by half and probably delivered a more potent punch. Too many details drown the message.
