The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

This is the second book by this author that I have listened to. Bryce Courtenay writes with consistent brilliance. I am so glad Audible had a two for one sale, so that I gave this author a try. His books are filled with facts and his characters are so well rounded, all wrapped in a captivating story. Any history and or nature buff should give these books a try. Humphrey Bower is a phenomenal reader!

From the author of The Power of One comes an inspiring human drama of three lives brought together and changed forever by the extraordinary events of recent history. Inspired by real events, Bryce Courtenay's new novel tells the story of three people from vastly differing backgrounds. All they have in common is a tough beginning in life.

First time Bryce Courtenay reader/listener here. The narrator read it the way I never could have, bringing the Australian and Chinese directly to me. The awesome song renditions were a delightful touch. I love the main characters so much I kept forgetting they were fictional. This books historical and political tidbits were fascinating. This book spans many continents and decades. I truly enjoyed the storytelling that this author has down pat. Absolutely wonderful listen!

I can’t imagine just how much research must have been done by the author to produce this spectacular novel! I loved all the highly informative tidbits about animal behavior and anatomy. After the first hour into the novel I was so interested, I had to listen to the entire book, with only a few short breaks. I liked the way the findings about elephants were interwoven with the story about the humans in this book. I think this book is a work of art. It moved me in so many ways. I have check out this author’s other book now. Thanks for a great listen Jody Picoult! The narrators were well chosen!
