More than two decades have passed since the events chronicled in The Butlerian Jihad. The crusade against thinking robots has ground on for years, but the forces led by Serena Butler and Irbis Ginjo have made only slight gains; the human worlds grow weary of war, of the bloody, inconclusive swing from victory to defeat. Get ready for Dune: The Machine Crusade.

In The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker, one of the world's leading experts on language and the mind, explores the idea of human nature and its moral, emotional, and political colorings. With characteristic wit, lucidity, and insight, Pinker argues that the dogma that the mind has no innate traits, denies our common humanity and our individual preferences, replaces objective analyses of social problems with feel-good slogans, and distorts our understanding of politics, violence, parenting, and the arts.

Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the grandest epics in the annals of imaginative literature. Now Herbert's son, Brian, working with Kevin J. Anderson and using Frank Herbert's own notes, reveals a pivotal epoch in the history of the Dune universe: the Butlerian Jihad, the war that was fought ten thousand years before the events of Dune - the war in which humans wrested their freedom from "thinking machines."

I found this book to be very good. I am a big Dune fan and had mixed feelings about reading another Dune book not written by the original author of the Dune series. But as the title of this review suggests I was surprised at how entertaining and enthralling this book was. There are many characters introduced in this novel and their plots interweave and build up nice and slowly. You really get a feel for each character. The plot is intricate enough and is not given away early on. Excellent. I'm looking forward to reading the other Dune books by this author.

Our founding fathers worked hard to ensure that a small group of wealthy people would never dominate this country. Thomas Jefferson believed that our very democracy depends upon our ability to play referee to the game of business, protecting labor and the public good. But over the last 25 years, we've witnessed an undeclared war against the middle class.

I thought this book did a great job at interweaving our history with present day economic and political issues. Be prepared to be angered at our elected leaders after reading this. Its a call to arms, a wake up call. Do not take your freedom and decent living standards for granted.
