A young couple buys a beautiful house by a picturesque lake in the Catskills, looking to escape the bustle of the city to raise their newborn baby. It is a perfect place for a fresh start. Except that nothing is ever as perfect as it seems. As autumn nights close in around their home, they learn that darkness takes many forms. And sometimes that darkness is hungry. New York Times best-selling author Jonathan Maberry delivers an unsettling Audible Original that will give listeners the Halloween creeps all year round.

This Audible Original short story is a winner. Creepy and horrifying, shouldn't be read just before bed. Narrator does a good job, and a couple of images from the story will haunt me for a long time.

Tornadoes, cyclones, tsunamis… Weather can be deadly – especially when it strikes without warning. Compelling characters who are real people--no saints, just people with problems and failures. And at least one stellar asshole. Life in the raw, salty language, and sudden turns of events leading to unforeseen choices. This one is a rapid ride, and ends on a cliff-hanger. If you're not paying attention, you'll miss things.
Also, the performance was fabulous! Not only will I look for more books by this author, I definitely want to hear more from this performer!

This was not what I expected. I listened to the entire thing, and liked it better as it went on. At first, I felt that the authors inserted themselves too much into the story (not common with true crime) and that their disdain for rural people and ways was clear. As I got deeper into the book, I became more used to it, and it was less jarring.
Also, the apologies for the sound quality were fine, but the apologies (and snide comment) on accents were also jarring. A bit less of that, and a bit more of simply repeating what may have been unclear due to sound quality or accent, would have been more useful. Perhaps this is due to the possibility that they expected the book to be mostly read in Ireland and the UK.
There was almost no information on the actual crime, which makes this not truly a "True Crime" book. It seems to center almost completely on the "suspect". It seems to imply that the "true crime" involved for the living man was greater than that for the murdered woman.
Just not my thing.

Life is not easy for the poor relations of England’s upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and London’s newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born. The establishment is an immediate hit with London’s most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester....
