Ok. Ok. Ok. Just finished it. Composing thoughts. Ahhhh!!!!! Fantastic world building, strong female protagonist, perfectly wrought romance. This rear of this review contains spoilers!!!!!

Pros: strong female protagonist (I don’t want to spoil anything so skip this next sentence - she’s does quite a bit of the reaching herself. So really really enjoyed the strong female lead. No helpless damsels in distress here!
Super well developed characters (mostly) and incredibly lovable main character.

Romance is exquisite and just right not overwrought or outlandish.

World building is fantastic! Spoilers: kind of reminds me of a super feminine version of Enders Game in terms of the universe but add court intrigue and dresses instead of war games. Really really really great world building.

Agh!!! Can not wait for the next one. Super super loved this. Actually, even if there wasn’t another book, the ending was super well tied and I could leave the world here happily.

Cons: towards the end, there is a lot of telling not showing. And honestly, I understand why. But I would have rather the book was longer and actually seen those portions of the book than just be told they happened. I wouldn’t have minded going with Bell on raids instead of just being told they happened. I would have wanted to spend more time under ground, learning more about ancient antheis. Maybe dug down more into that mystery.

But other than that I JUST LOVED IT! And the narrator was great too. Sometimes she pronounces a few words real funny but I do love her voice. It’s different and soothing and mesmerizing. Grade A stuff!!!

So the first half of this book was a complete waste of time. Character development is almost non existent, slow and very much at odds with where the characters land. It feels discordant and forced.

That being said, I have to admit that for some reason I kept listening. The main character is hard to like but somehow I couldn’t look away. My hopes for the next book are that things move faster and don’t meander pointlessly for the first 8 hours of a 10 hour book.

This is tale that crafts a deliciously rich world, but skillfully, still manages to develop all the characters we meet so they don't blur into a see of names I can't match to a personality. Where the first book in the series left you hanging in so many ways, this book answers so many questions and leaves you hanging, but in a I WANT MORE way. Not in a 'huh, well that was anticlimactic' in the way I felt after the first book.

It's got romance, magic, wrestling with inner and outer demons. Really enjoyed this. I'm a fan of Sarah J. Maas's books. While this world is very different and the authors voice is different also, I appreciate how the main character, powerless though she might feel, doesn't remain inactive or small. Its a tale of a strong female protagonist and the lengths she'll go to protect those she loves, even at great cost to herself.

To be honest the start is slow and confusing. But once you take the plunge it’s hard to look away. Nothing about this plot is symmetrical or predictable in the way so many YA novels have become. Just when you think you have a characters motives nailed down, everything changes.

I can’t wait to read the next one. Don’t give up too soon. Push through and you’ll be rewarded with a plot thick with intrigue, bursting with romantic angst and a richly developed world that you can sink into.

I’m glad I gave it a chance.

My first impressions of this story were 'a magnificently deep and richly crafted story with deliciously detailed universe development and a heroine I could get behind ....

But I'm still waiting. The universe was as I suspected indeed detailed and imaginative and blew me away. I also appreciated the deeper themes and motifs. But all along I'm waiting for the main character to blow me away ... while she does develop and change ... it kind of feels like the whole time 'winter is coming , winter is coming' and then it never does. I'm hopeful for the next book ... please tell me there is a next book so my questions can be answered ???

NARRATOR WAS INCREDIBLE!!! The story telling was perfection. Well done. Five stars. Standing ovation. So many different characters speaking and I know exactly which one is at any given time. She did a fantastic job.
