In a universe where technology and magic co-exist, Nicholas Lyons desires one thing: to serve his queen as a Space Knight in the Royal Trident Forces. But when his final mission as an Academy cadet goes horribly wrong, Nicholas discovers he possesses illegal magical abilities that grant him power far beyond that of a normal man, knight, or mage. When a clandestine assignment lands Nicholas on the worst starship in the kingdom’s fleet, he finds a motley crew of warriors hiding their own terrible secret. Death and betrayal lurk around every corner.
MSE writes another almost, pretty good book.

Protagonists is too stupid.
It's a good idea to leave room for characters to grow and learn but the main character's line of reasoning was too unbelievable. This book would have been better if there were stronger reasons for the beliefs he had, and choices he made. That way when he learned his lesson the audience could have been surprised with him, and it would have been a big reveal. Instead I was just relieved that he finally figured out what was painfully obvious from the start. That said, Nick Podehl never disappoints, and Michael-Scott Earle has many books on audible that are absolutely worth the listen. Even if you agree with my own assessment of this book, I hope you still check out some of his other works.
