I first came to know about Ann Cleeves through the Vera and Shetland shows. I loved the shows but they are nothing compared to the books. I thoroughly enjoyed listening. The characters and their stories are so well written and this narrator did a terrific job! I'm off to download another one!

At the burial of his old friend Magnus Tait, Jimmy Perez watches the flood of mud and water smash through a house in its path. Everyone thinks the home is uninhabited, but in the wreckage he finds the body of a dark-haired woman wearing a red silk dress. I may be obsessively listening to Ann Cleeves books on Audible lately but that's because they are so good! This is another great listen. The narrator is essentially perfect and the story is terrific. The characters and place are so well drawn out hat they feel real, like people I've met and a place I've just come back from. (In reality - a place she makes me want to go to!). So happy with the whole thing!!

Three very different women come together to complete an environmental survey. Three women who, in some way or another, know the meaning of betrayal.... For team leader Rachael Lambert, the project is the perfect opportunity to rebuild her confidence after a double betrayal by her lover and boss, Peter Kemp. Botanist Anne Preece, on the other hand, sees it as a chance to indulge in a little deception of her own. And then there is Grace Fulwell, a strange, uncommunicative young woman with plenty of her own secrets to hide....

I love the tv show but this was terrific. Obviously so much more to the story and the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book. It doesn't matter how long it took Vera to show up (and I love Vera) because the story and the characters were so interesting. And the narrator was perfect. An all round great book. As expected from Ann Cleeves and Audible.

I loved this. I'm a big fan of Vera on the TV and this narration fits right in with that. Terrific reading and great character voices, although Joe Ashworth comes across as more pompous than I picture him.
A great thing about the book is the depth and the detail, obviously the book has more time to develop the characters and the red herrings.
I love Vera, I love Audible, and I love this interpretation. One happy customer here!

If you could sum up Silent Voices in three words, what would they be?

absolutely wonderful listening!!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Vera of course. The characters are so well drawn and just fascinating. There is no judgment about the author's characterizations - they are what they are, and it just works so well. I guess they are like real people -not superheroes or models - just believable.

What does Charlie Hardwick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her voices were terrific and easily distinguishable. She was a terrific narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

A long car ride - but then I kept listening when I got to my hotel!!

Any additional comments?

I've seen this episode on Acorn, but the book is so much more detailed and interesting. I remembered who the killer was and why, but listening to this was a wonderful experience. Obviously, an 8 hour book has room for a lot more detail than a 90 minute show. I truly enjoyed the characters, the narrator , the twists and turns. I had to immediately get another for the long ride home!!!
