When struggling novelist James Hernandez meets poet Louisa "Lou" Bell, he's sure he's just found the love of his life. There's just one problem: she's engaged to his oldest friend, Rob. So James toasts their union and swallows his desire. As the years pass, James's dreams always seem just out of reach - he can't finish that novel, can't mend his relationship with his father, can't fully commit to a romantic relationship. He just can't move on.

This is my second Pagan book via audible and I thoroughly enjoyed it and was sad when it was over. Having not read the synopsis before jumping in, I was surprised by the male narrator but soon found myself engrossed in his narrative. Pagan's character development brings you into each character's world and I feel as though their old friends. I was unsure where the story was headed and enjoyed the roller coaster of emotions. I appreciated the method of which Pagan wove the timeline and her honesty in depicting the trials of post partum and the unique circumstances in which James finds himself. I laughed, I cried, and I recommend this book.

I am a huge fan of Shonda's shows, especially Grey's. I am also a mother. I really loved hearing her story and every woman's internal battle with what society has dictated and how we can change that in terms of balancing motherhood and work (part of this book, not all, and she speaks to all women, even those who choose not to be mothers). I understand she has a nanny but most working moms have daycare of some sorts. I appreciate her honesty in her struggles to know that if she is in office, then she is missing something at her children's school or if she is with her children, then she is missing something at work. This is our struggle.

I also loved the way she talked. As a fan of her shows, I could hear in her writing, dialogue of some of her characters. I enjoyed her speeches as well. I really think that being a fan of Grey's Anatomy (Shonda's first creation), had me predisposed to already love this book. I enjoyed getting to know the woman who created some of my favorite characters.
