War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The young lieutenant had been wounded and evacuated - but there's no record of him having ever arrived at hospital command.

I was really enjoying this book until the very end. It was as if the book were page limited and the author had to wrap up the story really quick before the limit was hit. There were several unanswered pieces of the story and it just abruptly ends with several of the mysteries unresolved.

United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

I am not talking about Skippy and Col. Joe, I am referring to the brilliant writing of Craig Alanson and the phenomenal performance of RC Bray. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the fact that it ended. Now I have to wait for what will seem like forever for the next book to come out. If your name is Craig Alanson or RC Bray and you are reading this, please stop and get your butt to work on book 6 ;-)

Captain Jackson Wolfe has been given the fleet's newest, most advanced destroyer and tasked with eliminating this new threat before it can claim any more human lives. What he finds, however, is immeasurably more dangerous than just some new class of starship....

Based upon the graphic novels by Joe Harris - with creative direction from series creator Chris Carter - and adapted specifically for the audio format by aural auteur Dirk Maggs ( The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Alien: Out of the Shadows), Cold Cases marks yet another thrilling addition to the pantheon of X-Files stories. not at all well adapted to audio format. This was completely horrible, I couldn't even finish it. the acting was bad, the production was bad, and the writing was bad. It was like listening to a TV show from another room there is so much context missing that it is hard to follow. There are points where they obviously attempted to insert context to help the listener but it comes across so awkward and out of place that it actually detracts from the story.

Infinity has a unique and interesting story line. the author did a marvelous job of pulling you in. The ending was much better than expected. There were several points where a lesser author would have just ended the book and left what happens next up to the reader's imagination, this author didn't take that easy way out. Instead there is a fully developed ending which made an already good book great.

I had several issues with this book:
First, the author tried to balance too many different story lines. All the story lines suffered because of this, the author was not able to pull off much depth or intrigue in any of the story lines. my suspicion is that was due to trying to take on too much simultaneously. It was almost as if this was the abridged version; I had to check twice to be sure that it wasn't.
Second, the narrator was pretty lousy. Accents were atrocious and wavered throughout the book. Most of the voices sounded almost identical. And worst of all, the narrator had a tendency to whumble (whisper and mumble at the same time) during certain portions of the book.
Third, the production was below par. For some reason the producers decided to insert "intense" music at "key" points in the story. I have listened to books which pulled this off successfully before, but this one missed completely. The music occasionally came on at seemingly random points, adding nothing but distraction to the story.

So, this book isn't really up my alley to begin with, but since it was free, I thought I would give it a shot. Bad idea. I can get past the subject matter, and the interviews with slime balls, but the thing I found most annoying was that the author roles credits every 45 minutes or so. I only made it halfway through and had already heard three times "butterfly effect is written by... and produced by... and ...." this happens for no apparent reason and at random breaks in the story.
