Overall it’s a good overview of the Six Sigma methodology, but I was hoping to hear more integration with lean. It was more of a six sigma approach with a few lean tools and concepts thrown in there (VSM, Kaizen and 2-Bin system). Suggestions include respect for people, leaders as coaches, daily huddles, 5S, Kata, Single Piece Flow, Gemba Walks, problems first culture, 3P, etc. That would make it more of a blended LSS approach.

By explaining the lean system for identifying and eliminating waste and introducing efficiency in every aspect of the farm operation, The Lean Farm makes the case that small-scale farming can be an attractive career option for young people who are interested in growing food for their community. Working smarter, not harder, also prevents the kind of burnout that start-up farmers often encounter in the face of long, hard, backbreaking labor. Lean principles grew out of the Japanese automotive industry, but they are now being followed by progressive farms around the world....

Let’s start your restaurant legacy right now, right here! National chains and single independent restaurants all started with an individual and an idea. A concept. A dream. Small ideas can grow into big business. Who would have thought that a guy with a milkshake machine could start a hamburger empire? A pizza made in a garage would start today’s pizza wars? A guy with a pressure-cooker would start a fried chicken phenomena? Business ownership has always been part of the all-American dream. Restaurants are the largest entrepreneurial opportunity in America for starting the dream.

Although the book is a great summary of all the information you will need to start a restaurant, it is light on the “run” and “grow” part of it. This is ideal for those considering starting a restaurant. If you are already involved in the industry, only the finance part of it might be helpful. I was hoping for more info about Lean Startup principles, but he only mentioned pop-ups and food carts as ways to test the market, with little detail about how to do that. Instead of “a lean startup guide”, the title should be called “a beginner guide”

Eco-Bags founder Sharon Rowe says there's another way: go tiny. She is here to show you how. Tiny isn't a size - it's a state of mind. Like a tiny house, a tiny business is built on maintaining a laser focus on what is absolutely essential to you.

Indeed, they argued that it would triumph not just in manufacturing but in every value-creating activity from health care to retail to distribution.
