As a well-known barrister and the son of a duke, Ives confines his passionate impulses to discreet affairs with worldly mistresses. A twist of fate, however, has him looking for a new lover right when a fascinating woman shows up in his chambers, asking him to help save her father from the gallows. Unfortunately, he has already been asked to serve as the prosecutor in the case, but that only ensures close encounters with the rarity named Padua Belvoir.

I understand that not all narrators can do a good job at voices for the opposite sex, but the excessively high pitched voices the narrator used for the male characters (especially for the Duke) made me cringe! And as if that wasn't bad enough, I truly didn't care for this story as much as the last one, finding it fairly boring through some parts. I see the next book had the same narrator so I'm not sure if I'll listen to it or not...

Overall I liked the story, however I couldn't believe how much she just let him walk all over her! So many places he'd run roughshod over her & she gave very little push back or arguement. Finally by the end of the book she stood up for herself but it was still a big drawback for me. I love stories where the Heroine starts out meek & grows stronger throughout the story, but I felt Vanessa made her progress all at once.

Mr. Carlisle is looking for an admin. Apply within. I'm way overqualified, but the economy doesn't care. After six months of job searching, I'm flat broke and mostly desperate. Rent is due in a week, my roommate sucks and is ready to toss me out, and I need an answer - fast! >Nothing prepared me for the man in the suit. Not two steps into the office and my panties burst into flame. The word "handsome" doesn't do him justice. Lucifer would slap him a high-five.

Not a bad story line overall & well told by the narrator... while I'll admit to being curious about Hunter's past, I'm nowhere near interested enough in what happens next to listen to 3 more books. Usually I'm better at avoiding serials since I hate long drawn out stories & I realize now why I must have passed over this one so many times before giving it a try. That said, if you don't mind that kind of thing it'd be worth a listen for you.

The overall story was decent but the awkward pauses of the narrator while she was reading were irritating! There were long pauses that would make you wonder if it was the end of a chapter, but then she'd continue & sometimes there would be several of these within a single thought process of the character! Not to mention there was at least once where she sounded like she was talking while she was eating! If you can ignore the pauses it's worth listening to, otherwise just read the book instead.
