Loneliness drives an agoraphobic shut-in to write a letter to the girl in the apartment across the hall, trying to strike up a friendship. Unfortunately, a series of apocalyptic events interrupt this attempt at human contact. Now he watches out the window as the world gets cut to pieces by plague and riots. There are even rumors of zombies. Getting to know someone could be harder than he thought, let alone surviving in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. He might even need to leave the apartment.

As anarchy and civil war took grip across the globe, Britain was quarantined. The press was nationalized, and martial law, curfews, and rationing were implemented. It wasn't enough. An evacuation was planned. The inland towns and cities of the United Kingdom were to be evacuated to defensive enclaves being built around the coast and the Scottish Highlands and in the Irish Republic. For George Tull and the other residents of the Waverly-Price Retirement Home, walking to the coast is not an option.

Winter is here. The cold spreads over the land, shriveling and choking out all the plant life. Harsh. Unforgiving. The first winter without electricity will surely claim more human lives as well. The isolation may do more damage than the cold, however. Too much time alone drives people to unthinkable acts.

The end of the world is close. The dead walk the Earth, feasting on the living. Rogue bands of crazies, gangs of cannibals, and evil organizations fight for what is left of civilization. Blood and violence are the laws of the land. Those that survive must do things that no sane person should be forced to do. Good thing Elsbeth isn't exactly sane.

This a solid author who writes good books. I only rated this book a four because some parts were a little too far-fetched but that is more a taste choice than probably the writing. It wasn't disappointing but the first book was really good so my expectations were really high.

This book didn't have a bad storyline but the narrator was so monotone it was hard to get through. With a different narrator I'd have probably rated this book a four. It should be kept in the "there really is nothing else on audible I want to listen to but need something to occupy my time" list.

This is more a teen PA novel but I still found it interesting enough to listen to quickly and as a basis to purchase additional books by the author. I plant to purchase the second book and after two additional Jack Hunt books.. I'm hooked. Of course, the fact I live in the Adirondacks so for the first time... ever... I can really picture the towns and places referenced is a plus.
