I found this book to be a fascinating reminder of old fashioned CIA-KGB spy games and the continuing need to keep an eye on Putin and Russia’s potential for treachery.

The story has plenty of twists, though a couple seemed pointless to me. It wasn’t as suspenseful as it could have been, I always knew who the good guys were, but I happen to like that.

One major drawback was the recipes being read at the end of each chapter. I have no interest in them and yet I had to suffer through them because I listen as I drive and it’s a bit difficult to skip them while driving.

Now I’m ready to see the movie. Overall, the one is definitely 5-star worthy due to its fast paced plot twists.

This story goes all over the place. It has too many characters who don’t seem to serve any purpose. It was easy to get lost when listening. The author would bring back a character that you hadn’t heard from in several chapters and I couldn’t remember who it was. This was incredibly frustrating. I don’t think it would have been much better in print form either, sadly.

I’m glad this was free, but still my time is worth something. This production can be summed up in one sentence - we still don’t know who did it. Sorry about the spoiler, but you really don’t want to put yourself through the suspenseful music and disorganized sequence of long chapters in this read anyway, so consider it a favor. ‘Nuf said.

Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces - behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe - detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

Danielle Steel always keeps me entertained and this book is no exception. The premise of the book is a bit hokey, but she makes it work. The whole thing is believable and a bit suspenseful. I like the characters. I found it current and fascinating.

Unfortunately the ending was so unsatisfying I'll probably never buy another Danielle Steel book again. You can't just end a book without letting the reader/listener know what happens to the characters, Danielle! C'mon, I spend 7 hours and 36 minutes with these people I wants to have a sense of where they go from here.

I loved everything about this book, from the multitude of interweaving plots, to the hysterical Turkish hotelier, to the deeply meaningful life lessons. . . but I think it lacks the constant tension required to be a thriller.

Having said that - read it. It’s one of my all-time favorite books. Probably gonna make my Top 10 list.
