Drawing on dozens of intimate audio interviews with families from all across the country, award-winning psychologist and writer Andrew Solomon redefines what it means to be an “ideal family” in America today. Solomon observes that America, led in large part by the women’s, civil rights, and gay rights movements, has undergone a radical social shift in the last few decades. Although the structure of family has changed, economic and legal structures lag behind and need to adapt to accommodate this explosive new reality.

I didn’t know what to expect when I first downloaded this audio series and I only chose it initially because one of the audible editors raved about it, but I’m so glad I did. This is one of the most interesting things I’ve ever listened to and I’m so glad Andrew Solomon is planning to write a book about this topic. I don’t think my view of family was too terribly limited before I listened to the series, but now my view has widened immensely and I’m so glad for it. I learned so much and want to tell everyone about it. Thank you Andrew and all who were involved for telling these honest, brave and sometimes heartbreaking stories.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away. But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos - the first and only love of her life - the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve.

Macy and Elliot’s story was wonderful. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the narrator, her voice sounded breathy every once in a while, but once I got used to that aspect, I enjoyed it. Lauren continues to knock it out of the park for me. I wait with eager anticipation for every new book and this one was no exception.

Once a devoted children's librarian, Jane Jameson now works at a rundown occult bookstore. Once a regular gal, she's now a vampire. And instead of a bride, she's an eternal bridesmaid -- which leads her to question where exactly her relationship with her irresistibly sexy sire, Gabriel, is headed. Mercurial, enigmatic, apparently commitment-phobic vampires are nothing if not hard to read.

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead.

Despite her celebrity status and high profile relationship, at the end of the day she’s a funny, down-to earth, woman just doing her best to raise a great kid and get through the day as well as she can.

I was drawn into Leah’s story by watching her show on A&E. I had heard about her book, but it was only until I saw her show that I was truly interested. I’m so glad I finally picked this one up. Her voice is authentic and genuine throughout the book. I feel like if I met her tomorrow, she’d be the same woman who comes through in the book. She’s honest, maybe at times a bit abrasive, but true to herself always.
