What made the experience of listening to Never Split the Difference the most enjoyable?

Applying the real-life experiences of negotiating in hostage situations to business challenges. Chris Voss clearly outlines the problems with our traditional negotiation techniques and why we have to learn the new ones or we risk losing much in the process.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Chris Voss, the author. It was fascinating to learn how he unlearned traditional negotiating techniques to real-life skills that actually work.

Which character – as performed by Michael Kramer – was your favorite?

The participants in the Haiti kidnappings. I did not realize the coaching techniques that were used to ordinary citizens in extraordinary circumstances could make things right for all parties involved.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The bank scene. The twist surprised me and showed the importance of listening carefully to all of the clues - or horrible things can happen.

Any additional comments?

We purchased several copies of this book and handed it to our teams. This is a combination of science and skills that can be the difference in your teams winning or losing business deals.

What did you love best about How to Get and Stay Motivated?

Short and sweet tips and reminders about the things that we should do but with a different twist as to why we WILL do it. It was so good that I have already listened to it twice. I expect that I WILL listen to this every quarter to pick up another nugget of wisdom.

Who was your favorite character and why?

GC - Grant Cardone - my preference is for the author to do the audio for each book. GC keeps you motivated throughout this and many of his other books.

Have you listened to any of Grant Cardone’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, this is my 8th book for Grant Cardone. This book reminds me of The Millionaire Booklet. A conversion with you about what he has learned and why he thinks if you adapt these traits they will make you great.

What did you learn from How to Get and Stay Motivated that you would use in your daily life?

Many times it is the simplest of things - that make you feel better - which helps you stay more motivated. A couple of the key tips were about getting that win early to exercise, eat better and take advantage of every 15 minutes. In the past week, I ran 5.5 miles for the first time in 4 years, played my best round of golf and experienced more joy and time with my family...which carried over to make a greater difference in building a company.

If you could sum up Shoe Dog in three words, what would they be?

The Transparent Knight

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shoe Dog?

Phil Knight is climbing Mt. Fuji and he finds the first love of his life - and this was memorable because it was the last thing that I expected to read when I purchased this book. I was even more surprised to learn that he did not marry his first love.

Living in Oregon since the great Mt. St. Helens explosion, I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the candid story of our own local legend who transformed the shoe industry and the people around him. It was fun to read an excerpt regarding Jim Gorman as I went to school with his son Nate. This is a continuous tale of overcoming the next mountain top to realize that the next set of mountains gets even more difficult. A pleasant and painful reminder that no great accomplishment has an easy journey.

What about Norbert Leo Butz and Phil Knight - introduction ’s performance did you like?

From the beginning, I was engaged as Phil Knight talked about his journey to learn about truth and his upbringing in Oregon and throughout the world. I realized that I was going to learn something that I had never read despite being within 20 miles of him for the past 37 years.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Very close...but I was not driving to Boise.

Any additional comments?

Best audio book that I have listened to in the past 3 years. An instant classic and must read.

Four weeks after Navy SEALs had killed Osama bin Laden, the President of the United States stood in Arlington National Cemetery. In his Memorial Day address, he extolled the courage and sacrifice of the two young men buried side by side in the graves before him: Travis Manion, a fallen US Marine, and Brendan Looney, a fallen US Navy SEAL. Although they were killed three years apart, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, these two best friends and former roommates were now buried together - "brothers forever".
