Although you really don't have to read or listen to the prior books. One would be missing a lot not doing so, as this series grows in complexity and creativity as it continues on in its telling.
Wendy Fremont King's narration is spot on for this series.
In fact have restarted the series and am enjoying it all over again.

I really like the premis the story is built upon. Mother Nature taking corrective steps to thinning out the heard. Granted it was never stated that way in the story.
What I did not like was what I felt was an over use of flashbacks. That interfered with smooth progression of the story.
Still did buy the book and the Audible but sorry not a give star review.
