A wicked Scottish winter has just begun when pioneering female physician Sophia Jex-Blake calls on Detective Inspector Ian Hamilton to investigate the suspicious death of one of her patients - a railroad lineman who she believes succumbed to the horrific effects of arsenic poisoning. The most provocative aspect of the case doesn’t escape Hamilton: the married victim’s numerous sexual transgressions. Now, for the first time since the unexplained fire that killed his parents, Hamilton enters the Royal Infirmary to gain the insights of brilliant medical student Arthur Conan Doyle.

What a book! I loved the characters coming to life as told through both stories and first person. I could feel their pain and joy through the authors words. Finally, bravo to the author for exploring the bittersweet feelings of giving, sacrifice, grief and love in a beautiful way. So much of life is bittersweet, and this book doesn’t shy away from that and so its breathtakingly real and honest.

Loved the mystery, the case evolution and the characters’ personalities! Nicely done romance too- not too sweet but intense and perfect for a mystery. Hoping there’s a sequel! Also the Narrator did a great job - she was dramatic enough but not over the top and did well with the kids voices. I highly recommend!!

This is not my normal genre-I was worried it would be a sappy story overly filled with platitudes and plots that just don’t occur in normal life. That is not the case here. These characters are real and flawed and their plots are bittersweet, like life. I laughed I cried and I ached to know what would happen next for both young and old. Thank you to the author for writing it and thank you to the narrator who captured it.
