It is September 8, 1943, and Claudette Blum is learning Italian with a suitcase in her hand. She and her father are among the thousands of Jewish refugees scrambling over the Alps toward Italy, where they hope to be safe at last, now that the Italians have broken with Germany and made a separate peace with the Allies. The Blums will soon discover that Italy is anything but peaceful, as it becomes, overnight, an open battleground.

Sometimes when you read or listen to a book a moment will have an incredible impact on you. There is a moment early in this book that is so heartbreaking and beautifully written that I think about it every time I used the highway exit I was on when I first heard it. Campbell's performance of this wonderful book is a favorite of mine. And I come back to it at least once a year. It never gets old for me. #Audible20

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

When something goes wrong, and I am under severe stress, the Ready Player One recording is one of my go-to stress relievers. Wil's reading perfectly captures the 80's cultural nostalgia of the story, and for a 30's something nerd like me it is perfect. #Audible20

Would you listen to My Notorious Life again? Why?

I wouldn't listen to this again, because I couldn't stand the reader. Which is annoying, because the story was excellent.

What was one of the most memorable moments of My Notorious Life?

The descriptions of the lives of women of the time, especially lower class women, were excellent. And the medical care they received was stomach turning.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The story already has a melodramatic feel, and she takes it about three steps too far. Her voice becomes grating, and getting through the story took effort.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Elizabeth Gaskell, famed authour of Cranforn, is cherished for her incise social observations and portrayals of the changing nature of English life through the Industrial Revolution of the Victorian era. Mr. Harrison's Confessions is a warm, funny portrait of life in a small English town. Narrated by the young Doctor Harrison, we follow his practice and his courting in this charming tale.

What did you like best about Mr. Harrison's Confessions? What did you like least?

I'm going to have to try to read the story on my own. The narration in this recording is horrible. The reader speaks so fast she is difficult to understand. And while some women can read books where the narrating character is a man, this reader can't.

How could the performance have been better?

Slower, Male reader.
