Drew Michalik was working in a top-secret facility in Washington, DC, when the Advent began. As all electronics in the world simply ceased to work, blue screens filled with information appeared before him. Drew was given access to a mana interface and a limited number of reality-altering crystals called Xatherite. Following the instructions on his vision-impairing screens, he "slotted" his Xatherite and changed his fate: He gained the ability to cast spells. Now alone in the dark, he must battle through the government bunker turned dungeon in a desperate bid for survival.

Loved this book. Large fantasy fan but the road this one takes is refreshing. Just when you think you've got the general arc of the storyline pegged, the scope and sheer scale of the true shape of the world is mind bending. 5/5 recommended

For novices and advanced students alike.
For me personally, it reminded me of the beauty of thought in itself and justified my own abundance of confusion about a million things and nothing in particular. Helped me begin to see that I don't have to go Good Will Hunting every moment and to expect that of myself is not only unreasonable but also off balance

Twelve-year-old Zero is traveling with 20,000 people for 105 years to colonize a new planet. Everyone is in stasis, so they'll be safe during the trip, but when Zero's pod malfunctions it wakes him early, like 105 years early. At first he's excited to be the only one awake - he has the entire ship to himself, so he can go anywhere and see and do and eat anything he wants - but when a family of space pirates show up, trying to hijack the ship and kidnap the colonizers, Zero has to think fast and find a way to stop them all on his own.

What was once the Peradaini Empire is now a wasted landscape of burned, empty cities and abandoned farmlands. The Blessing, now more numerous than ever, continues to spread across the continent, driving refugees to the dubious safety of the city walls. Unharvested crops mean that few strongholds have enough provisions to last the winter, although most know the grunts will take them before starvation will. But hope survives.

The premise is interesting but not capita tingly so. It feels as if Sanderson is missing his usual fervor in this title.
Also the narration was lacking. Completely ruined the silver-tongued main character for me.
