the story is ok. the heroine is a VERY natural submissive, timid and shy. The problem is she doesn't evolve as a character. The hero's mother disrespects and walks all over her, but Daddy doesn't notice or come to her defense. He only acts when his momma disrespects his trainer. That in itself is not horrible. What made me angry enough to yell at the book was when the Daddy took his anger out on his baby girl with a beating. That was not bdsm play; that was not a loving correction of disobedience. That was abuse of power, plain and simple. She did not derive any pleasure from it, as evidenced by the fact she wasn't wet when he entered her. The heroine actually believed she needed to be the recipient of his beating to help him deal with his anger. If an author is going to write in this genre, then she shouldn't misrepresent the lifestyle. That was a perfect example of when a safe word should have been used. No dominant should do a scean while angry, and no sub should be subjected to that anger. Submission is a gift that should be treasured and respected. Any disregard of that gift should have been addressed, and the Daddy should have had to do more than just say I'm sorry. There should have been consequences.

The story is poorly written, and the narrator is painful to listen to.

SL uses the word grimace umpteen dozen times in her books. the only reason I know this is because this narrator mispronounced it every single time. She also mispronounced Dalziel's name as well . she said it as Deal emphasizing the second syllable.
her voice was so pedantic, I had to listen at 1.55 speed just to get through it.
Other than that, I enjoyed the story.

Who is this Mr. Darcy and what are his intentions? Like much of Meryton, the Bennets of Longbourn anticipate the arrival of Mr. Bingley and his friends to Netherfield, yet an unexpected visitor is not a part of Mr. Bingley's or Mr. Darcy's plans. While the two gentlemen attempt to control their uninvited guest, Elizabeth Bennet arrives to tend to her ill sister.

Pros:
The story's plot was well conceived and wonderfully executed. It was perfectly paced. The story was different enough to be refreshing, but stayed mostly true to the original. The characters were fully formed, and I loved the fate of Lydia and Miss Bingley.

Cons:
The narrator made the story difficult to finish. She was monotonous and dull, especially when portraying a male character.

I had trouble putting it down! I originally became interested in this series because anything narrated by Kate Reading is worth the listen. Then I had to get this book because of the writing.
Sherry Thomas is excellent at weaving an entirely original story from a classic piece of fiction. I love variations, especially of Pride and Prejudice. What if stories are sometimes disappointing; that was not the case with tis book. I'd give it 6 stars, if only I could.
Although this mystery is a stand alone novel, I would strongly recommend listening to the first book. It not only introduces all the major players and their relationship to one another, but gives you a better understanding of their motivations.

This is my first Loretta Chase novel, so I hope her writing skills have improved.

Her plot line was wonderfully original. I truly enjoyed the heroin's struggle with her late husband's insecurities. I laughed out loud so many times, my husband thought I was losing my mind.
I loved Kate Reading's narration. Every voice was distinctive. Her accents were spot on, and her pacing and inflexion bring life to the story.
I only had one one complaint. If I heard: he said, she said, one more time, I thought I would go insane. English 101 : do not repeat the same words over, and over, and over. There are so many different verbs to use when your characters are in conversation. If you can't think of any, most computers have a thesaurus in the word processing program. Use it.

I truly enjoyed the what-if story line. The characters stayed fairly true to Austen's intent.
The best part was how Mr. Bennett, Mary and Miss Bingley grew from their experiences.
Unfortunately, the choice of narrator left something to be desired. It was difficult to tell the difference between characters at times, especially the young ladies. Mr Bennett's voice was very annoying.
