Barry Laverty, M.B., can barely find the village of Ballybucklebo on a map when he first sets out to seek gainful employment there, but already he knows that there is nowhere he would rather live than in the emerald hills and dales of Northern Ireland. The proud owner of a spanking-new medical degree and little else in the way of worldly possessions, Barry jumps at the chance to secure a position as an assistant in a small rural practice.

This is a delightful story of a young doctor Laverty who heads off after med school to apprentice with the fearsome, wily, and kind Dr. O’Reilly in the Irish country-side town of Ballybucklebo. The parade of characters made me laugh and wish I could join them in this rollicking good story!

Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

I am not a usual fan of war books, but I found these first hand accounts of D-Day by 5 different German soldiers On the front lines in Normandy gripping and searing. The horror of war and the sacrifice of so many men is moving beyond words.

I feel like Chip and Joanna Gaines just sat in my house and told me their story. They are so personable and authentic. I found inspiration in how many times in their life they were led by God and listened to their guidance and followed what they heard.

Secret Service agent Clint Hill brings history intimately and vividly to life as he reflects on his 17 years protecting the most powerful office in the nation. Hill walked alongside Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Gerald R. Ford, seeing them through a long, tumultuous era - the Cold War; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy; the Vietnam War; Watergate; and the resignations of Spiro Agnew and Richard M. Nixon.

As a book that traces the history of the major political events of my lifetime, I found this to be a fascinating journal of one secret service agent's extraordinary eyewitness account of what went on to protect the president of the United States from the 1950's through the 1970's. For me it humanized each of the presidents and have me an even higher regard for the men and women whose jobs it is to protect our nation's leaders, even at the risk of their lives.
