On any Sunday morning in the Florida Redlands, Dee Casteel might have served you pancakes at the IHOP. She was a hard-working, cheerful waitress, one of the nicest people you'd ever want to know. She was also a three-bottle-a-day alcoholic, hopelessly in love with the IHOP's manager, Allen Bryant. Bryant wanted his live-in lover, IHOP owner Art Venecia, dead. And Dee Casteel helped him to arrange it.

I've read a lot of true crime and this seems to be an interesting story that just doesn't quite hit the mark. The characters aren't well developed and I didn't walk away feeling I understood them as much as I usually do in these types of books. Way too much time is spent talking abt alcoholism and it seems to end abruptly.

I listened to this book on audible and the narrator was perfect. I felt like someone was sitting across from me telling me the story. I loved the way the author told her story, but was also able to understand others motivations and weaknesses. I applaud the courage it takes to live through those times, have those experiences, and to be able to share it with others. I feel I have a much better understanding of the times, and wonder what I would have done if faced with the same thing...

SuperSense is a fascinating exploration of the forces that shape people’s beliefs in the irrational - and also a compelling look at how these beliefs bind humans together in society.

I thought the concept was interesting and the first chapter grabbed me but it was downhill from there. There was way too much telling what was going to be told later in the book and referring back to early examples. Lots of gory details about things that disgust people. I didn't think the narrator had a very interesting voice either. I wanted to finish it but finally decided to cut my losses.

In Broad Daylight tells the story of the killing of Ken Rex McElroy on the main street of Skidmore, Missouri, in July 1981. McElroy, an illiterate hog farmer, had terrorized all of northwest Missouri for over 20 years, until the town, and even law enforcement, was terrified of him. McElroy was shot as he sat in his truck in front of the tavern. Over 45 men witnessed the shooting. Despite two eyewitness accounts and three grand jury investigations, no one has been prosecuted for the crime.

Very interesting. Paints a good picture of a small town struggling with a difficult issue. Also identifies failure of the legal system to protect.
