Fall of Giants is the first book in a trilogy about the massive geopolitical upheavals of the 20th Century. In this book author Ken Follett starts prior to World War I with interacting characters from a Welsh coal mining community (aristocrat and working class), a small family of Russian peasants, an aide to President Woodrow Wilson and an ambitious group of characters from Buffalo, New York. Using the experiences of these characters, he tells the greater story of how WWI came about, the terrible carnage the world experienced, the collapse of the Russian and German empires, and the beginnings of an egalitarian revolution in Britain. A great read and I am looking forward to books 2 and 3 in the series.

What did you love best about Last Hope Island?

A good balance of the "big picture" and the individual acts of heroism of the refugees who continued to fight Hitler even after their countries were defeated by the Nazis.

From a long-time Harry Bosch fan: M Connelly has given us a great new (female) detective. Combined with his usual attention to detail, authentic cop lingo and exploitation of his knowledge of LA topography, this new series should maintain Connelly at the pinnacle of the crime fiction genre. Any additional comments?

A well-written history of the civil war leading to the ouster, trial and execution of Charles I, and the orgy of royal revenge against the "regicides" during the restored monarchy of Charles II. The restoration of the Stuart monarchy, and the bloody retribution which followed, which were very much on the minds of the founders of the United States more than a century later, when they signed the Declaration of Independence. This book was professionally and objectively written by a descendant of the Stuart monarchs.
