This constantly amusing and eloquent story, probably the greatest book-length poem in English, is a pure delight, always entertaining. The author speaks right to the reader, joking and showing off his erudition while telling a great, episodic story. Don Juan (pronounced in the British way as "Don Joo-an," or sometimes by Bryon, "Jooney,") is not the sexual predator of other versions of the story but a rather sweet, hapless young man whom women, young and old, coarse and aristocratic, can't keep their hands off of. Lots of swashbuckling adventures, pirates, shipwrecks along the way, with the author's many digressions from the story as entertaining as the action.
The reader, Jonathan Keeble, is terrific, a wonderful ham, perfect for the material.

Some of the most powerful stories about war ever written--not about fighting but about the effects of combat on soldiers and others, deep psychological insight into personal tragedies and redemption. Literary fiction, deserving the National Book Award

a fascinating text, beautiful verse in an easy style, very well told. the opening creation story, a hymn to
Venus, is an eloquent poem in itself. Interesting ideas, including early secular humanism, the elevation of science, an explanation of the atomic theory 2000 years ahead of its time.

Reads like an epic fantasy novel, with strange heroes and creatures, many adventures, some humorous, some spooky, a real joy to get caught up in. Longfellow borrowed the rhythmic scheme for "Hiawatha"; this scheme adds to Kalevala's hypnotic spell. Well narrated.

Conrad’s brilliant novel, his very best, entranced me from beginning to end. This was my second reading of the book, and I found it as powerful as ever. The characters are beautifully drawn, the setting is sinister and magnificent. The novels reader did a very good job with It, rendering it dramatically, slowly, and eloquently.

I have Taught Caribbean literature at a university, and I think this is one of the very best new novels from this area. It is one of the best novels I have read this year: beautifully written, with memorable characters, humor, Pathos, tragedy, set in a very rich Caribbean setting. This author is one of the very best. I highly recommend this book. Edward Hower

Would you consider the audio edition of The Fire Next Time to be better than the print version?

Both are excellent.

James Baldwin's "The Fire Next Time" is an indepensible piece of American history, describing issues that are still burning in this country. It's also a moving, personal story, beautifully written.

Baldwin remains one of America's very best writers; all his books will be important parts of our literary heritage, especially his powerful essays like his one.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fire Next Time?

It builds powerfully toward the climax.

What about Jesse L. Martin’s performance did you like?

Excellent

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

All of it

Any additional comments?

I hope every new generation re-discovers Baldwin.
