The handsome, rakish heir to a dukedom, Lord Roland Northbridge Wilde - known to his friends as North - left England two years ago, after being jilted by Miss Diana Belgrave. He returns from war to find that he’s notorious: polite society has ruled him “too wild to wed”. Diana never meant to tarnish North’s reputation or his heart, but in her rush to save a helpless child, there was no time to consider the consequences of working as a governess in Lindow Castle. Now everyone has drawn the worst conclusions about the child’s father, and Diana is left with bittersweet regret.

This story of a woman reluctant to become a duchess, but who isn’t quite sure who/what she is, has its moments. But it’s way too predictable & the story is rather simplistic. Duerden’s performance is admirable but could not save this book.

I’ve had this Audible book almost since it first issued. If you’re seeking a light-hearted, witty & engaging story where the performance is top drawer, this is it. It’s as good the third time largely because of Landor.

My new major criterion for whether an Audible book should receive high marks is whether I would treasure revisiting the characters, story & performance. Definitely so here. Even though I will recall the plot twists, I will return.

This writer could be quite good but this book isn’t appealing. Excessive graphic detail of sadistic villains on killing sprees is not material I want to read or hear. More deft writers can portray sadistic threats without the gore.

Definite capability in witty repartee & crafting interesting characters.

I had to skip most chapters owing to the violence. Then found the end commits a fatal sin: this is not truly one complete book but rather one-third of one book. Unlike good trilogies, this one cannot stand on its own. It has numerous loose ends & attempts to lure the reader into buying more.

I buy books gladly - including multi-volume series- when the author completes each book well. In such a series each book intersects & offer intriguing interplays with others but each can stand on its own as a complete book. E.g Lisa Kleypass, Julia Quinn. This author needs to work on this skill, & editors need to require it.

Almost no one realized, however, that Alice was secretly in love with someone else - or that she had confided her feelings to a clever talking mynah bird who announces these intimacies at the moment of the couple's wedding. Now the gossip mongers are relentless. Alice's marriage started out, and has remained, cold and impersonal, and her new husband is already rumored to be taken with another woman.

What did you love best about If the Duke Demands?

Wit & some plot twists

What about Justine Eyre’s performance did you like?

different voices that well distinguish the characters, and help to provide the historical & geographical context. Eyre is one of my favorite audio performers, along with Mary Jane Wells & Rosalind Landor.

Any additional comments?

I look for books by narrators I enjoy, and that's how I found this book.

As the daughter of a famed author, Isolde Ophelia Goodnight grew up on tales of brave knights and fair maidens. She never doubted romance would be in her future, too. The storybooks offered endless possibilities. And as she grew older, Izzy crossed them off. One by one by one....Now Izzy's given up yearning for romance. She'll settle for a roof over her head. What fairy tales are left over for an impoverished 26-year-old woman who's never even been kissed?

I’m a big Julia Quinn fan, & esp enjoy the Bridgerton series. The only disappointment in this book was the author’s attempt to retell Cinderella as the origins of Sophie, the protagonist. Once she parted from that retread, the novel was excellent.

Landor rescued the story in a typically superb performance but I still found on 2nd reading that I wanted to skip the initial Cinderella tale- which includes no small amount of spite & brutality. Quinn is better than this book, but it fills in an essential brother’s story.
