I can't close my eyes...I refuse to. Every time I do, all I see is blood, death, and pain. I can feel it - almost taste it, bringing me back to that night. It doesn't matter that I'm still breathing; I no longer need it, I no longer want it. I despise it along with everything else around me. The only thing I long for is to f--king fade away. I've given up. Until her at least...Avalon. She comes into my world, knocking me on my ass. Once she sees the damage that I'm capable of; she'll look at me like everyone else around me does: with fear.

Salome knows only one way to live - under Prophet David’s rule. In the commune she calls home, Salome knows nothing of life beyond her strict faith, nor of life beyond the Fence - the fence that cages her, keeps her trapped in an endless cycle of misery. A life she believes she is destined to always lead, until a horrific event sets her free. Fleeing the absolute safety of all she has ever known, Salome is thrust into the world outside, a frightening world full of uncertainty and sin; into the protective arms of a person she believed she would never see again.

Laytham Ballard once protected humanity as part of the Nightwise, a secret order of modern-day mages dedicating to holding hellish supernatural forces at bay, but that was before a string of sadistic ritual murders shook everything he believed in - and sent him down a much darker path. One that has already cost him most of his soul as well as everything he once held dear.

I wish I could hangout with Laytham Ballard. And I LOVE Bronson Pinchot bringing him and his world to life. As with the other Nightwise book this is kinda gritty, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Worth a credit, worth a reread. I am already looking forward to the next trip in to "The life".Still looking for Cheer Wine in New England. Five stars across the board only cause I can't give more!

They may not have the power to shift like the Valdier or the Sarafin, but they have hidden powers of their own that they closely guard. Not even his best friends, Creon Reykill of the Valdier or Vox d'Rojah of the Sarafin, are aware of the powers he holds within his deadly frame.

I devoured the Dragons Calder series narrated by David Brenin who is great by the way, so I was impressed with the new narrator. But I did enjoy the story. I am planning on starting another of her alien series. Hopefully it will be as interesting as the Valder, Sarafin and Curazon. Crossing my fingers that Valder books 10 & 11 get audio version soon.
