Players of C&C know the basic rule of "never split the party" however that never accounted for being stuck in a magical world where death can be a very real thing and the chance of going home getting smaller. So after the last book our main characters go their separate ways facing their own struggles, returning to familiar places, and reuniting with past characters as they try to help one of their own.

It's one of the best novels in this series having the characters return home but not without realizing not everything is back to normal. Now in a race against time with a little help from someone from the game Tim, Cooper, Julien, Dave, Kathrine, and Chaz must make the best of their situation to put everything right.

Tim and his friends find out the hard way that you shouldn't question the game master, and you shouldn't make fun of his cape. One minute, they're drinking away the dreariness of their lives, escaping into a fantasy game and laughing their asses off. The next minute, they're in a horse-drawn cart surrounded by soldiers pointing crossbows at them.
