It should have been a case like any other: a missing princess, a king willing to pay in gold for her return. But before he realizes it, private investigator Eddie LaCrosse, a slightly shopworn sword jockey with a talent for discretion and detection, is swept up in a web of mystery and deceit involving a brutally murdered royal heir, a queen accused of an unspeakable crime, and the tragic past he thought he'd left behind.

This is a great book if you have an 8 to 10 hour round trip drive with your spouse. For the guys, it's got cool sword action, hot red-heads carrying weapons, all wrapped up in a mystery set in a fantasy medieval world. The ladies will like the mystery and the romantic twits and the velvety smooth voice of narrator Stephan Rudniki (this is definately HIS role) - my wife melted in her chair when his deep mellow voice came out of our car stereo. It's a great relief from the good vs. evil quest fantasies that are so worn out in this genre. I'm ready for the second book!

Great fantasy with a great story and a shocking twist or two at the end, told in the style of Raymond Chandler novels.
