My Oxford Year audiobook cover art

First off, this isn't a perfect novel, but if I'd written it I would be bloody proud. Julia Whelan is one of my favorite readers, and she puts her heart and voice into bringing her story to life. I found myself disliking Ella at times, but she grows in character and subtlety during her Oxford year, and in the end I just have to admire her. If you're looking for a romance with a strong female protagonist, quirky secondary characters, and a can't-stop-listening-to reader, this book's for you.

Ultimately a heart-wrenching story of a British Sergeant in search of a son, and a boy who needs a father, but angles for a superhero to play out his game plan. In this puzzle, the pieces can't fit, but in the end there is still love and hope. Harkaway has a knack for quirky characters who twist the heart with bravery and loneliness.

This trilogy is so complex, yet so compelling. Robin Miles brings the characters into your ears, your head, and your heart--I hated to leave them (or have them leave me). If I didn't have a huge backlog of audio to work through, I would start The Broken Earth immediately. I'll get to it, just not yet. Hugely recommended.

Thant being said, I JUST missed giving it 5 stars. I have since finished the second volume, which I do give five stars. Sadly, I didn't purchase it from Audible, so can't rate it here, The reader is amazing and the story complex and compelling. Can't recommend enough!

Loved the individual voices and the diary entries. The lads grow and mature over the course of the story--but not too much. Looking forward to Part 2.

I was happy to return to England and revisit some of the characters from other books in the series. Miss Gwen deserves her own story and some happiness.

After finishing, I feel manipulated and slimy. I need a shower. Juliet
Stevenson is a brilliant reader. The best part of the experience.

This may be one of the saddest books I've encountered. Yet it is also hopeful in its ending, which is also a beginning.

Descriptions of this book cannot capture the depths of its characters, or their shallowness, in some respects. Experience for yourself the loneliness of Arthur, the strength of Yolanda, and the courage of Kel. These characters will stay with you for a long time.

The readers of this audio book are perfect.

This volume starts slowly, but picks up speed as the tale progresses. The ending leads right into the final volume of the trilogy, and I can't wait to listen. Jaron needs to secure his kingdom before his body gives out! The reader is okay, but could be more expressive.
