In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

I love, love, love Stephen King - and have read & listened to many many books. I was impressed initially with the writing.

Story was ok at first - then very confusing...too many characters - only listened to 5 chapters. Narrator was awful - voice not only grated on me, but the up and down (whisper to loud) prompted me to remove the book from my device - I listen while I drive so I was continually adjusting the volume. I will note never to purchase a book narrated by Marin Ireland (and Stephen King himself)

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

a believeable story

Has Mr. Mercedes turned you off from other books in this genre?

no, King is my favorite author - thats why I'm so taken aback at the quality of this book - I've never been so disappointed - I could have written it better

How could the performance have been better?

I listen to books in the car - when the narrator whispers, which is good for the effect, I can't hear and always have to reverse - perhaps he shouldn't whisper so low.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment

Any additional comments?

I'm so disappointed, I almost want a credit to be put back on my account :(
