As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

I have to say that it is a mystery to me that this story, this series, hell this whole damned franchise is built around a woman, but the focus of this ensemble is the men. I love this series, I've been an immense fan of Ellen Ripley since I had the pants scared off of me in the initial release. But this story is about a woman, a kickass, strong, loyal, reliable woman with tremendous integrity, Laurel Lefkow brings Ripley to life. There is no Alien without Ripley, no Ripley without Lefkow, who sometimes seems to channel Sigourney Weaver. Rutger Hauer? Really? Ash is a pivotal plot point for sure, but on the basis of what does he get top billing? I like Hauer and all, but geez! Come on folks! This is a story about a woman!! Top billing should go to a woman! Promotional material should focus on a woman!

So, apologies to Lefkow, but I'm I can't rate the performance as more that a fail.

I love the story. I went through in all in a single day. I particularly like that is is a story that is suspenseful, intense and emotionally engaging that has lesbians as characters. It is not a book about lesbians. The flashback scenes are tres hot and I liked most of the characters as well as I could without much backstory.
My only concern is that the book contains several long, intense and detailed descriptions of rapes. These may be triggers and the description makes the book like a basic HEA. So, if you are likely to be triggered by rape scenes I suggest this book be approached carefully.

Dr. Kate Morrison doesn't know how or why someone would create human bombs that are triggered by touch. But when Sergeant Andy Wyles blocks Kate from touching the patient who collapses in her Vancouver ER, Kate joins the investigation to demand answers, regardless of the danger. As the two women work together to find those responsible for creating an army of human weapons, Kate finds it increasingly difficult to ignore her feelings for the fiercely protective and unrelentingly perceptive cop.

I applaud Jessica Webb. What she has done here is write a suspenseful rom/dram in which the main characters are lesbian. Too often what we get is a book about lesbians with a story thrown in. Webb makes the gender identity of the characters apparent but the story is what is important. And it is a good story, containing mystery, suspense and a creepy sociopath. The characters could have been gay, or hetero and it would have played as well.
My only problem with the audiobook is that the narrator has this way of speaking that is maddening. She begins many of her sentences with this H "heh" sound that sounds as if what is to follow is snark or at the least comical and/ or ironic. It is very distracting and drew me away not only from the experience of the book, but also confused my understanding of what was being expressed.
Ruby has improved over the years (and god knows with 300 plus pure porn shorts to her credit she's had lots of practice) but it remains a big problem.

This is one of a million cases in which the reader (this was neither performed nor narrated) ruins the book. This one seemed to have no understanding at all of the link between punctuation and voice modulation.
I got through the book because I liked the story But is would have been 5 stars with a better narrator.

A. This book reads like a training manual for the “Red Pill” mouth breathers who believe that all women are secretly dying to submit if just the right caveman will show up.
B. Morgan is a gullible idiot who thinks with her clit, thereby reinforcing the fantasy of a women as putty in the hands of an Alpha Male.
C. Jack Cole is a lying manipulative bastard who doesn’t care what emotional damage he inflicts on an innocent bystander so he can get revenge on the guy who had the temerity to dent his ego.
Seriously. Shayla Black has got to be a man taking his shot at Sh*tting all over women.
Submission is a gift. It is properly given to a partner who has the compassion and empathy necessary to understand the deep needs of the submissive. The dynamic only works if both parties have a deep respect for each other. (Talking about real D/s here, not the Top/bottom just looking to get off scenario)
This book insults both Doms/Dommes and subs. It also insult our intelligence.

All that said, I liked the narrator very much.

The book is a fine HEA romance. It feels like it could have been 75 to 100 pages shorter by cutting back on the characters’ hand wringing but it didn’t make the story unpleasant.
The narration however, is a whole other thing. I’m not sure if the producer slowed down the speed of speech if that is the narrator’s natural cadence, but the pace was positively soporific.

The premise is good. The general flow is good. Seth is a freaking Dolt. His refusal to adjust and his perennial awkwardness, makes the book excruciating to try to get through at one time. Every now and again I had to tell Arghhh bang my head on the wall and try aging later. I liked the other characters and they were the only thing that gave me the incentive to bear SETH. He has the personality of a golden retriever and is as dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to social interaction with his best friend and his best friend's wife; people he has known for years. I can only imagine him as a drooling Idiot amongst those he does not know well. I cannot imagine this Jethro attracting not one, not two, but three women and convincing them to marry him. It would be like marrying your favorite big old stuffie, and about as gratifying.
