The world of Dematr had been locked unchanging for centuries by the Great Guilds, most people living in a world of oil lamps, crossbows, and horse cavalry, the Mechanics reserving to themselves the technology for steam locomotives, rifles, and far-talkers while the Mages treated all others as if they were nothing - until Master Mechanic Mari, dragon slayer and pirate queen, and Master of Mages Alain raised the army of the new day to free their world.

I actually really loved the storyline to continue this series. Sometimes long series tend to get either boring, repetitive, and complicated or don't resemble the beginning of the series but this was nice. I love Macleod Andrews' narration. The only thing I didn't care for was Jason's accent. I realize it was probably accurate but not my favorite type of accent to hear.

Maximus Compass is a vampire without direction. Without heart. And without soul. He lost his true mate in the great battle against the dragon king, and now must face life alone. And yet something is happening to his agony. It's fading away, leaving him with barely a memory of the female he believed to be his one and only.

I really loved this story but holy heck the male narrator needs to be cut out. I found myself torn when the story switched to Maximus' point of view. I enjoyed his side of things but the narrator managed to make all the men sound prissy and the girls sound just downright vapid. I know male narrators have trouble with female voices but this sounded just like how guys mock a girl voice. Eva did an excellent job with all the characters. I'm just glad the intimate scene was done by Eva because it was hot hot hot hot hot hot hot.

Loved the story, felt like it dragged in a few places. Especially during the rescue. I thought they would never get there. But overall, I almost enjoyed this more than Jessa's story.
