At 36, Hope McKenna-Smith is no stranger to bad news. She lost her mother to cancer, her husband left her for a 22-year-old, and her bank account is nearly depleted. Now, Hope’s beloved French-born grandmother Mamie, who wowed the Cape with her fabulous pastries for more than 50 years, is drifting away into a haze of Alzheimer’s. But in a rare moment of clarity, Mamie realizes that unless she tells Hope about the past, the secrets she has held on to for so many years will soon be lost forever. Arming her with a scrawled list of names, she sends Hope to France.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

What a horrible book - I barely made it through the opening. Totally unnecessary language, although considering the story line I should have known better.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger

A young army vet, Michelle returns to the quaint Blackberry Island Inn to claim her inheritance and recover from the perils of war. Instead, she finds the owner’s suite occupied by the last person she wants to see. Carly Williams and Michelle were once inseparable, until a shocking betrayal destroyed their friendship. Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator for this book had a terrible sing song voice. It was hard to finish the story listening to the narration. She was high pitched and even the descriptive passages were done in a sing song voice.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was good with the background of the island and inn.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

It was difficult to finish the book listening to her sing song voice. I would have given it a lower rating if there was one available.

Any additional comments?

I will definitely watch closely and listen to samples before selecting any other books and will certainly never get another by her,

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, make it less predictable

Would you ever listen to anything by Nora Roberts again?

Yes

What didn’t you like about Therese Plummer’s performance?

Too much of trying to portray the character rather than read the story.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

more background story of the characters. They were not very well developed.

Any additional comments?

It must be an early Nora Roberts book - her other books are much better.
