It's kill or be killed in the space penitentiary that houses the galaxy’s worst criminals, where convicts face off in gladiatorial combat while an underworld gambling empire reaps the profits of the illicit blood sport. But the newest contender in this savage arena, as demonic to behold as he is deadly to challenge, is fighting for more than just survival. His do-or-die mission, for the dark masters he serves, is to capture the ultimate weapon: an object that will enable the Sith to conquer the galaxy.

This book has nothing to do with Darth sidious, Darth Plagueis, the dark side, or even Star Wars. this is a story about prison and pit fighting and gambling and I don't know what in the world it has to do with Darth maul. the main character could have been anyone. apparently the force doesn't work in prison. the single plot line narrative with a lot of blood and violence. writing is mediocre at best. I gave up at 1/4.

Memory makes reality. That’s what NYC cop Barry Sutton is learning, as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome - a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. That’s what neuroscientist Helena Smith believes. It’s why she’s dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious memories. As Barry searches for the truth, he comes face to face with an opponent more terrifying than any disease - a force that attacks the very fabric of the past.

Welcome to Wayward Pines, population 461. Nestled amid picture-perfect mountains, the idyllic town is a modern-day Eden - except for the electrified fence and razor wire, snipers scoping everything 24/7, and the relentless surveillance tracking each word and gesture. None of the residents know how they got here. They are told where to work, how to live, and who to marry. Some believe they are dead. Others think they're trapped in an unfathomable experiment. Everyone secretly dreams of leaving, but those who dare face a terrifying surprise.

I jumped right into this after finishing Pines. Unlike the first novel, this one cannot stand on it's own. Of COURSE I'll read the 3rd, but I'm always a bit irritated when a novel fails to tie up loose ends on it's own. It was satisfying, but relies too much on the final volume in the trilogy.

On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root - its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fierce rivals for the emperor’s favor, and outspoken adversaries on Imperial affairs - including the Death Star project - the formidable pair seem unlikely partners for such a crucial mission.

Nothing has happened after 4 hours. I'm sitting in my route van, twiddling my fingers on the steering wheel, wondering WHEN something in this damn novel is going to happen. If I want to be bored for 4 hours, I'll go to church or a time share sales pitch, I DON'T expect that from a book I've paid for!

I just don't get it. The first THRAWN book was so good. Either this was done by a ghost writer or Zahn absolutely cannot write sequels.

If, IF something happens in this plot, I'll never know because I've given up at roughly 25%. That's how much time an author gets from me before I quit. There are far, far too many good books waiting.

I'm skipping the upcoming 3rd book, obviously. Shame. But then, the first one does fine on it's own. Without this pointless money grab without substance.

Finally, I have a gripe with the narrator too. Went does Thrawn sound like Captain Jack Sparrow? And Anakin sounds like Spongebob's friend, Patrick. What gives, guy? That's distracting in an already weak novel.

Wayward Pines, Idaho, is quintessential small-town America — or so it seems. Secret Service agent Ethan Burke arrives in search of two missing federal agents, yet soon is facing much more than he bargained for. After a violent accident lands him in the hospital, Ethan comes to with no ID and no cell phone. The medical staff seems friendly enough, but something feels…off. As the days pass, Ethan’s investigation into his colleagues’ disappearance turns up more questions than answers. Why can’t he make contact with his family in the outside world? Why doesn’t anyone believe he is who he says he is? And what’s the purpose of the electrified fences encircling the town? Are they keeping the residents in? Or something else out? Each step toward the truth takes Ethan further from the world he knows, until he must face the horrifying possibility that he may never leave Wayward Pines alive…

The only surprise in this novel is the complete lack of any plot surprises. You know exactly what will happen and the only question is how many people in Jerusalem's Lot will die before "it" happens. With a stake and hammer.

The narration was painfully slow, had to speed it up 1.25 which i never do. At 1.1, I counted 5 seconds of dead air between some sentences!
