Growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has lived a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, and while her bullying seems isolated at first, things quickly escalate, and reclusive World War I veteran Toby becomes a target of her attacks. While others have always seen Toby's strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness.

I read this book as a professional duty to mentor some fifth graders for the Helen Ruffin Bowl but it turned out that it wasn’t a duty but a joy. It is not a light read and it addresses some dark issues. I loved the the author trusted her audience to handle them without getting easy answers and quick fixes. In the main character of Annabelle the author has created a strong female lead who will be compared with other young heroines like Scout Finch. The book has important themes and I wasn’t surprised that it was initially written for adults but I hope young readers will flock to it as it’s beautifully written and full of wisdom. I will be curious to hear what the fifth graders thought of it.

There's a murderer on the loose - but that doesn't stop the girls of St. Etheldreda's from attempting to hide the death of their headmistress in this rollicking farce. The students of St. Etheldreda's School for Girls face a bothersome dilemma. Their irascible headmistress, Mrs. Plackett, and her surly brother, Mr. Godding, have been most inconveniently poisoned at Sunday dinner.

I loved the characters in this lighthearted mystery. The performance by Jane Entwhistle was top notch and brought the author's words to delightful life. While I am usually not keen on mysteries, this book was great fun!

One of the comedy world's fastest-rising stars tells his wild coming of age story during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed. Noah provides something deeper than traditional memoirists: powerfully funny observations about how farcical political and social systems play out in our lives.

This book was instantly enjoyable. Some of Trevor's stories are funny, some sad but all are engaging and highly entertaining. I hope he is working on volume two.

This book was most excellent. The characters engaging and believable. The description of the war front harrowing. No great mysteries or suspense but a well told story with superb narration. After listening this to this I will be adding Ms. Simonson' s other novels to my wishlist.

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”
