In John Scalzi's re-imagining of H. Beam Piper's 1962 sci-fi classic Little Fuzzy, written with the full cooperation of the Piper Estate, Jack Holloway works alone for reasons he doesnt care to talk about. Hundreds of miles from ZaraCorps headquarters on planet, 178 light-years from the corporations headquarters on Earth, Jack is content as an independent contractor, prospecting and surveying at his own pace. As for his past, thats not up for discussion.

The survivors have come to settle in the mountains of Wyoming, fighting day in and day out to establish a home for themselves in a near-empty world. Things are good at first; scavenging is a workable, short-term solution that seems to be providing all they need. But they know that it’s only a matter of time before the food runs out. They need to scramble to find a sustainable solution before the clock stops, and for a little handful of people up in the mountains, the odds don’t seem very favorable.

My favorite addition to the survivors is Gibbs! He's comic relief, the voice of reason and a badass all wrapped up in one.

Bronson Pinchot does an outstanding job narratoing this series and this book was no exception, all the voices and accent he did, man that scene with the Russian and Italian docs, Kate and Big Horn! Awesome!

It's the start of summer vacation, and poor Tony has just lost his grandfather. His father is deployed overseas, and his mother is raising him and his little brother all alone. But that's not what's bothering Tony. It's that his nana will be all alone in her small, rural home during the heat of summer, doing the yard work, the laundry, and all the things around the house, while mourning her husband. That won't sit for Tony. With his mother's permission he moves in with Nana for the summer.

THE SHED
Chris Philbrook is at his copious best with this short story, from describing the drops of puss plopping on the kitchen floor to Nana's dentures flinging from her mouth. Having a warped sense of humor, I found this story kinda funny in a gory, zombie apoc sort of way.

It's a great addition to the other 3 trips into the AUD world. If you are a fan of the AUD series, get this book. If you haven't you probably want to wait until you've passed the vignette in the series. It was cool to visit the ALPA neighborhood. As usual JAF does an excellent job narratoing, to me he IS Adrian. I think I'm going to go listen to the series again ♡

THE VAMP OF MENLOW PARK
This short is on another collection of short stories, AT LEAST HIS HEAD ISN'T ON FIRE, and was a standout story. I think it could become a whole book if Chris ever wanted to get into writting vampire books.

Confucius says: A great narrator can make an OK book GREAT.
BUT, a poor narrator can make a great book bad and can kill an mediocre book.

Unfortunately this book had 2 strikes against it.
1) A poor narrator

2) It suffers from "Lack of Editing"

BUT, this story line is very good, so there could still be hope for the series. I need to see if book 2 is available and if improvements were made before I continued with it.
I have friends who are authors and their first books that were published had some very rough edges, so I'd like to give this author the benefit of the doubt and hope he found a *better* editor AND narrator with some emotion in his voice.

I loved this new offering from Chris Philbrook. It's different than his previous series, more Sci-fi than fantasy. Although it's different, you can tell CP is no stranger to the genre because it was a kick-ass story! Action, monster bugs, zombie bugs, giant vegetable like vegetation with killer slime, traitors, and impassable and deadly atmospheric obstacles. Sounds like fun, right?
There is also a new narrator in the mix. Most of CP's books are narrated by James Foster, whom I love. For me the narrator is almost more important than the story and it's hard for me to accept new narrators. I was so glad when Kevin Stillwell knocked it out of the park on this.
This is a great storyline. I hope CP writes more in the series!

Would you consider the audio edition of Victory's Defeat to be better than the print version?

Yes, I don't think the story would be the same without Sean Runette's voice.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved that we got Dee's back story - well at least the beginning of his back story.

What does Sean Runnette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He's the voice of Mike Talbot. Even when he narrates other stories I hear Mike Talbot.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

No alliance is safe in this war for earth

Any additional comments?

The thing about Mark Tufo's writing is that you are left wanting more. As the book was coming to an end I couldn't help but think "when is the next book coming out?".
It was a great book and I can't wait to see what happens next!
