While you may not "technically" need to have the information from the Internal Devices, Mortal Instruments, or Shadowhunter Academy short stories, Lady Midnight very clearly takes place after all of those events and the endings of each are very explicitly discussed. I also don't know if Clare explains her world clearly enough in LM, so you would probably want to have already read everything. I had read all but the Shadowhunter Academy shorts, and I was a bit sad to learn that I needed to already know what happened in them. They contained more main character plot than the Bane Chronicles had, and it directly affects the events of Lady Midnight.

I love these two crazy love-struck idiots. :) I do want to say that while you don't NEED to have read the entire series to read this, and it won't spoil the main plot of the series..... I think that Sinner is better appreciated with the experiences that you get from the entire story. Cole and Isabel are different people than they were before they met in Minnesota, and I don't think it needs any more explaining than to say that the events of the main trilogy shaped the way that they think & act now... which makes it easier to love and appreciate them.

Firstly, I LOVED it. I had some trouble with accepting the male narrator, though. His parts felt very choppy & it somewhat dragged me out of the story whenever he began speaking... but overall, it was well done. Despite what the author claims, however, I would NOT advise anyone to read this book before finishing The Infernal Devices, as I believe that CoHF would terribly & blatantly spoil the end to Clockwork Princess. Some of the characters overlap, and I think it's fairly obvious what their identities are once you know anything about them from the prequel series.

This was recommended to me by a friend, and what she told me was that I would need to give the series a chance. It starts off slow, and then I had tons of questions that arose from the intricate time travel rules. However, if you DO give the author that chance, it will be well worth your while. By the end of the trilogy, she clears up all of the little oddities that occur along the way and provides a lovely ending.

I loved this series in the beginning, and then after Neferet was solidly on the side of Darkness, the series dragged on for about 3 books. All of that crushing boredom finally becomes worth it in the last 3 or 4 hours of Destined. I feel like the plot FINALLY feel like the plot got off it's lazy ass and started going again. I was going to quit, but now I feel invested again and will continue on with the series.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Honestly, I don't know what can fix this book. It's TOO... much. Unlike the other stories, This one had the heroes killing LEGIONS of monsters with relative ease... I lost interest in how things were going, because it didn't feel like it mattered. Yes, this is a book aimed at kids. That's never been a secret... but this one felt like Riordan wrote it too unrealistically for the world that he's created. What? you're nearly dead? Here, just wait 5 seconds and you can kill another 5 giants... no problem.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I'm very interested in how Leo and Nico's stories will play out. I won't add any spoilers, but they are the two characters who will have to have the most creative endings.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I've never heard this narrator before, and this is the first problem. I don't like when narrators are switched up in the middle of a series. Joshua Swanson & Jesse Bernstein felt nearly interchangeable to me because they did their voices similarly. This guy made all of his characters sound close to the same as each other, but also very pompous. I started to dislike the story because I disliked the narrator's interpretation of my characters.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not. Movies have become an issue of how invested you are in the story, and I am no longer that invested. Obviously, I'm going to finish the series... but I am not a fan of the direction it took in the House of Hades.

Any additional comments?

House of Hades "should" have felt FAR more perilous than it did... I'm starting to believe that Riordan is afraid to kill off any characters. We can't go on believing that everyone is happy-go-lucky safe ALL the time.... it doesn't make for a good story. I'm not asking him to kill everyone off.... but I'd like to believe he'd do it to me.

Would you listen to Scarlet again? Why?

Maybe....but only because I enjoyed the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Scarlet?

It's not a major plot point, but my favorite scene was when Icho first "woke up" as the ship. I love her!!

What didn’t you like about Rebecca Soler’s performance?

Her complete inability to decide whether or not she was going to do a french accent for Scarlet (and all of the other French people, for that matter). I accepted the no accents for the Asian characters, so it would have been fine if she didn't want to do one for the French.... but the fading in and out DROVE ME NUTS.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to them at work, so I only get about 6 hr chunks. It might have been less annoying if I HAD listened n smaller portions.

Any additional comments?

Otherwise, I have no complaints. It took me FAR longer than it should have to realize that "Scarlet" was a red riding hood tale...but I didn't read the description before buying it. I loved Cinder so much that I just blindly forged ahead. lol

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I expected this book to be scary and nightmarey like the original was.... only with a continuing plot.... That isn't what I got. The only "creepy" parts came directly from the Shining as flashbacks, and since I've read that book SO many times, they aren't even slightly creepy to me anymore.

Would you ever listen to anything by Stephen King again?

Probably not anything new, and even then I'll be sure to read a million reviews beforehand. I certainly won't pre-order any of his upcoming books.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Will Patton?

I don't know who Will Patton is without looking him up, but ass a narrator he did fine... I feel like it took a few hours to get a handle on his voices, but thereafter they are distinct.

What character would you cut from Doctor Sleep?

I wouldn't cut any CHARACTERS, per se.... but I would cut about a million pointless SCENES and flashbacks. Like I said above, it felt like there were long stretches of Shining replays that failed to serve much of a plot purpose.

Any additional comments?

While I disliked the book on the whole, there are some interesting character relationships and emerging details about Dan's life & his parents' lives that I'm glad to know... but he could have taken out about 10 hours of pointlessness & still said the same thing. I won't be listening to this book again.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I tried this new series because I loved the VA/Bloodlines books, but I felt like I was dropped into a world that wasn't explained or defined by the author. Also, Emily Shaffer is a fantastic reader, but these new characters very clearly have the voices that she used for VA/Bloodlines. I lost the thread of the story because I kept hearing Eddie, Rose, & Dimitri. I feel like this book needs a different narrator to even give it a chance.

Has Gameboard of the Gods turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. I think the main problem is that Mead fails to describe her new world before face-planting the Reader into the plot.

Would you be willing to try another one of Emily Shaffer’s performances?

Only if she can learn some new voices. The VA/Bloodlines characters are very distinctive, and should not be re-used in new books by the same author. It makes things confusing.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Gameboard of the Gods?

To be honest... I quit. I have no idea what was going on, so I quit. If I were editor, I'd tell Mead to go back to the beginning and tell me wtf RUNA is.

Any additional comments?

I'm returning this book.
