Crass, foul-mouthed and surprisingly engaging. I don't live amongst drunks so I gots me an education. I am amazed that people survive as long as they do and can laugh about their time in a spiraling death trap.

I am comfortable with accepting that I lead a rather restricted, to some, a boring life, and have spent too little time having sex. (Be honest, it's not about resisting the message. It's about acting on lessons learned.)

The most enlightening message that I gleaned from the book is that no matter how self-destructive and self-centered and damaged a person becomes, we all keep space inside ourselves to be loving and supportive of others.

Not for everybody but for more people than you'd think.

This would have been a fine enough book if it wasn't for the reader. She is a great actress, don't get me wrong, and she does womens' voices beautifully, but all her men are awful. They all sounded like 90 year old villians when they were supposed to be young and good. It made the listening to it so confusing.

This was such a wonderful unique story I absolutely loved it. I had to go back a couple times to pick up some facts I glossed over, but easy enough. Such a full spectrum of stepping in another’s shoes with empathy. Beautifully written and the acting was superb! The only problem I had, was I wished the actress would voice farther from the microphone. Some words or sentences were startling loud, like she was moving in and out from the microphone. For a person like me, who listens by earphones, it was unsettling, though she was a fantastic actor who pulled off multiple characters convincingly.

I loved this book except could not stand the overacting of the older woman, Ingred/Astrid. She over dramatized her character's voice so poorly that I lost focus on the story. The younger woman was incredible and I loved listenting to her excellent accents. I felt little pieces in the book were repetitive and the author could have edited them out. But besides that, this is a wonderful story of WWII, so unlike the others.

The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

I have relistened to them over and over so the mass of information sticks. She is one talented writer. I hope to be one day too!
