Men give their undivided attention to those who respect them. If a man doesn't feel respected while communicating with you, he'll find the respect he needs elsewhere. The woman who knows how to communicate with men can influence the man she wants without resorting to "that mini-skirt he loves." A man craves the attention of a graceful woman who knows exactly what to say to him, when to say it, and, most importantly, how to say it to get what she wants.

This book was unbearably condescending to women and didn't give men credit for being much more capable of discernment or seeing through obvious ruses which skirt the real issues. The basic premise is stroke a man's ego and never question him. He is the "Captain" and the way for his "First Mate" to be irresistible is to be subservient and non confrontational. That may work great on a ship, but not for mature adults in a relationship.

This book gives specific practical advice about how to change the only thing you can control: yourself. I read her first book and was shocked by her advice. But I tried it and it worked. My husband even said years later during a rough patch, he wished I would read that book again. Try it.

  • The Life of Greece

Here Durant tells the whole story of Greece from the days of Crete's vast Aegean empire to the final extirpation of the last remnants of Greek liberty, crushed under the heel of an implacably forward-marching Rome. The dry minutiae of battles and sieges, of tortuous statecraft of tyrant and king, get minor emphasis in what is preeminently a vivid recreation of Greek culture, brought to the listener through the medium of supple, vigorous prose.

I've read the whole series over several years and am now going back to listen to them. The author is insightful, humorous and eloquent. I cannot recommend the series highly enough. It would not be an overstatement to say this broad sketch of the history of western civilization contributed to a change of my worldview. (This title is one of eleven.)Durant is a joy to read.

Not many surprises

I was so disappointed. The only reason this had enough content to be a book is because the author spent so much time on the process of the study. The conclusions were minimal and mostly common sense. The times he claims to have findings contrary to popular belief, they are simply warnings that you cannot generalize and that other factors may affect the outcomes. I waded through to the end hoping for some useful information, but was continually annoyed at how much he touted the difficulty and impressiveness of the study itself and his analysis of it. I guess if you have devoted your career to the analysis of one study, then you would tend to become overly bogged down in the process. So if you are a statistics major and interested in the laborious process, this is the book for you. If you wanted helpful tips on longevity, this book will disappoint.

Really gets you talking

In several years as a listener, I've never taken time to review a book, but this one deserves to be recommended. I've studied Italian for several years as a hobby, and this is the best resource I've seen to get you to actually practice. The rhythm motivates you to speak along with the teacher. I don't know if it would be as useful to someone with no basic knowledge of the language, but it is excellent for practical usage once you've got the basics. Most audios do not motivate you to speak out loud back to them, which is really the only way to get good at it. I've listened to it over and over, as well as Volume 2 which is also excellent.
